Previous issue date: 2016-07-06 / Este trabalho trata das representações culturais que registraram as interfaces entre género e modernidade na Parahyba do Norte e em Pernambuco durante as décadas de 70 e 80 do século XIX. Para pensarmos as relações de género mobilizamos a teoria de género de Joan Scott, qual seja a de não polarização dos sexos; também nos valemos do conceito de práticas e representações culturais de Roger Chartier; e de modernidade para Gumbrecht, que a entende no formato de cascatas, cenário no qual múltiplas ideias e conceitos ganham forma sequencialmente, e para Koselleck, que a demarca a partir de mudanças responsáveis por reconfigurar o espaço de experiência e o horizonte de expectativa da sociedade a partir de fins do século XVIII em diante. Dois fatores motivaram a construção da pesquisa: a falta de estudos no campo da História que abordassem a temática no período recortado em relação à Paraíba e a consciência de que a falta de estudos de ambos os gêneros correlacionados contribui para a permanência de uma cultura social que separa os sexos em rígidas fronteiras.
Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, adotamos a noção de que a formação das identidades de gênero poderia ser adquirida também via contato com produções culturais a exemplo do jornal, suporte para a circulação de imagens relacionadas a formas de ser feminino e masculino por meio de ideias vinculadas à modernidade. Consideramos também que na Paraíba a modernidade configurou-se de maneira seletiva. Isso porque no período em estudo ela tinha por principal característica a multiplicidade de imagens que se tomavam por realidade a partir das escolhas feitas pelos agentes de opinião via imprensa. A década de 70 do século XIX, momento em que ocorrem a emergência do abolicionismo, do Partido Republicano e o fim do padroado no Brasil, ofereceu, sem dúvida, farto conteúdo à imprensa, que também produziu esses eventos, inclusive relacionando-os às questões de gênero e a ideias de modernidade, conforme poderá ser visto nos capítulos que compõem esta dissertação. / This work deals with the cultural representations that recorded the interfaces between gender and modernity in Parahyba do Norte and Pernambuco during the 70s and 80s of the nineteenth century. To think about gender relations mobilized gender theory Joan Scott, which is the non polarization of the sexes; also we make use of the concept of cultural practices and representations of Roger Chartier; and modernity to Gumbrecht, that means in the form of waterfalls, scenario in which multiple ideas and concepts take shape sequentially and Koselleck, that demarcates from changes responsible for reconfiguring the space experience and the horizon of expectation of society from the late eighteenth century onwards. Two factors motivated the construction of the research: the lack of studies in the field of history that addressed the issue in cut period in relation to the Paraíba and the knowledge that the lack of studies of both correlated genres contributes to the permanence of a social culture separates the sexes in rigid boundaries. For the development of research, we have adopted the notion that the formation of gender identities could be acquired also through contact with cultural productions such as the newspaper, support for the circulation of images related to ways of being male and female through related ideas modernity. We also believe that in Paraíba modernity set up selectively. This is because during the study period it had as main characteristic the multiplicity of images that took for reality from the choices made by via press opinion agents. The 70-nineteenth century, a time when the emergence of abolitionism
occur, the Republican Party and the end of patronage in Brazil, offered undoubtedly had
enough content to the media, which also produced the event, including linking them to issues gender and modernity of ideas, as can be seen in the chapters of this dissertation.
