Hypnosis has been studied in different health related areas such as medicine, dentistry and also the sports field. This research aimed to investigate triathlon athlete's perceptions of visualization characteristics of the Iroman race, as well as its psycho physiological components during trance state. 7 male athletes have been studied within 6 hypnosis sessions each. After each session, a semi-structured interview has been done and a questionnaire has been applied. The heart rate (HR) was monitored during trance in every session. Results point to relaxation and concentration as the main characteristics of the hypnotic trance in triathletes. The athletes felt body relaxation which was confirmed by cardio frequency. The HR slowed down significantly in the beginning of the trance (p = 0,000) remaining low until the end of the trance, when increased significantly (p = 0,000). The HR mean was 60 bpm corresponding to what was reported during the research. The athletes reported to be concentrated during the entire trance, especially on the therapist's voice. The focus attention was more intense during the visualization. The participants tended to fell their bodies from normal to warmer and lighter. The subjects noticed the entrance and exit from the trance happening gradually and naturally. The hypnotic phenomena hipermnesia, catalepsy and anesthesia were present less frequently. During the visualization of the race, the athletes answered on the questionnaires, to be in an internal perspective (inside the image) or to vary between internal and external perspective. On the interviews this perception appeared well distributed between being inside, outside or between. The athletes reported to see mental images in good quality (medium focus, medium light, medium size, colorful and with regular movement) pointing a proximity to real life images. The participants noticed to be breathing slowly and deeply, which also corresponded to the cardio frequency behavior. It has been concluded that hypnosis applied to triathlon athletes during the visualization of the Ironman Race produces typical hypnosis behaviors, and the characteristics concentration, relaxation, anesthesia and hipermnesia can be even better used on the sports field. Hypnosis is a useful tool on triathlon practice and it has a potential to be explored in others sports.
