Não apenas o tema importa para gestores universitários, sempre em busca de recursos para manter e expandir a atuação de suas instituições, mas também para a sociedade em geral e para os indivíduos e organizações em particular, por colherem os benefícios da educação superior. Este trabalho busca contribuir para o diálogo trazendo com contribuição o estudo comparativo das fontes de financiamento empregadas em duas instituições de ensino superior: a Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, em Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brasil, e a University of Massachusetts Amherst, em Amherst, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos. Especificamente o estudo demonstra como se dá o financiamento das atividades das duas instituições, identificando quais são os entes financiadores e quais as ferramentas de gestão empregadas pelas IES na gestão de tais recursos. As IES retratadas no estudo são ambas públicas, cujas origens legais podem ser traçadas a iniciativas de seus respectivos Governos Federais.<br> / Abstract : The issue of university funding and its implications for the autonomy of institutions of higher education crosses borders and is discussed throughout the world. Not only the subject matter to university administrators, always looking for resources to maintain and expand the activities of their institutions, but also for society in general and for individuals and organizations in particular, by reaping the benefits of higher education. This paper seeks to contribute to the dialogue with contribution bringing the comparative study of the origin of resources employed in two Higher Education Institutions: the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst, Massachusetts, United States. Specifically, the study shows how is the financing of activities of both institutions, identifying which are the ones that lenders and management tools employed by the HEI in the management of such resources. The IES studied are portrayed in both public laws whose origins can be traced back to initiatives of their respective federal governments.
