No. of bitstreams: 0 / This study examined how listeners from the South of the United States and from the South of Wales categorize vowels produced by English-speakers with Spanish, Dutch, and Brazilian Portuguese as their first language, and also how they categorize vowels produced by speakers of a third English dialect (Californian English). The findings show that Welsh and American listeners have different perceptual problems when categorizing the vowels produced by the four speaker groups. It is shown that these differences can be explained on the basis of two attributes: (1) the Dutch, Spanish, Brazilian, and Californian speakers' English vowels differ acoustically, and (2) the Welsh and American listeners use different perceptual strategies to categorize these vowels.
Este estudo investigou como falantes nativos de inglês do sul do País de Gales e do sul dos Estados Unidos categorizam vogais produzidas por falantes de inglês com espanhol, holandês e português como suas primeiras línguas, e também como eles categorizam as vogais produzidas por falantes de um terceiro dialeto do inglês (inglês californiano). Os resultados mostram que os participantes do País de Gales e dos Estados Unidos têm diferentes problemas perceptuais quando categorizam as vogais produzidas pelos quatro grupos de falantes. Essas diferenças podem ser explicadas com base em dois atributos: (1) as vogais produzidas pelos falantes holandeses, espanhóis, brasileiros e californianos são diferentes acusticamente, (2) e os participantes do País de Gales e do Sul dos Estados Unidos usam diferentes estratégias perceptuais para categorizar essas vogais.
