Vermeer e Christiane Nord, há inúmeras traduções possíveis de um mesmo texto, dependendo das características desse texto e do encargo de tradução (Übersetzungsauftrag), que grosso modo refere-se ao "para quê", "por quê", "para quem" da tradução. No presente trabalho, proponho quatro projetos distintos de tradução do romance The Years, de Virginia Woolf, como exemplo das múltiplas possibilidades tradutórias existentes no funcionalismo alemão. Além das idéias dos funcionalistas, as estratégias de tradução de Peeter Torop, da escola semiótica de Tartu, virão complementar as estratégias sugeridas por Nord. Ademais, o trabalho reflete acerca dos pressupostos teóricos do funcionalismo, discutindo seus aspectos mais e menos produtivos.
Within the scope of the Functional Approach to translation, and particularly within the reflections of Katharina Reiß, Hans J. Vermeer and Christiane Nord, the same text may be translated in several different ways, depending upon its characteristics and upon the translation brief (Übersetzungsauftrag), which basically concerns the "what for", "why", "to whom" of every translation. In the present thesis, I shall propose four different translation projects of Virginia Woolf's The Years, as instances of the multiple translation possibilities found within Functionalism. In addition to the ideas of the Functionalists, I will make use of the translation strategies devised by Peeter Torop, from the Semiotics School of Tartu University, so as to complement the strategies suggested by Nord and Reiß. Furthermore, I shall reflect upon the theoretical basis of Functionalism, aiming at criticizing its least productive aspects.
