Teve como propósito conhecer o significado atribuído pelos familiares cuidadores de idosos com câncer em fase terminal aos cuidados oferecidos pela equipe de enfermagem e explorar como a equipe de enfermagem de Serviço de Cuidados Paliativos percebe o cuidado proporcionado ao familiar cuidador do idoso com câncer em fase terminal. A pesquisa foi realizada no Centro de Pesquisas Oncológicas (CEPON), Instituição de Saúde especializada no atendimento oncológico do Estado de Santa Catarina, e foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa desta Instituição. A coleta de dados foi realizada no período de maio a outubro de 2009. Utilizou-se para o desenvolvimento da mesma a entrevista semi-estruturada, gravada com os familiares de idosos com câncer em Cuidados Paliativos e com a equipe de enfermagem do Serviço de Cuidados Paliativos. Os dados levantados foram organizados com o uso da técnica de análise de conteúdo de Minayo, com base nos pressupostos e concepções nos Princípios de Cuidados Paliativos (2002) e da Teoria do Cuidado Transpessoal de Watson. Conferindo-se a extensão e a abrangência da enfermagem na sua missão profissional humanística junto ao idoso com câncer e sua família em momentos difíceis e de sofrimento na fase terminal da doença. Também foi contemplada a convergência com a experiência expressada pelo familiar em termos de percepção e significados dados ao processo de cuidar do parente idoso doente e ser cuidado ao mesmo tempo pela enfermagem. Os familiares cuidadores de pacientes idosos com câncer, ao darem depoimentos acerca do cuidado recebido da enfermagem do Serviço de Cuidado Paliativos, apontaram-no como algo especial; um fazer além dos cuidados comuns. Contudo houve manifestação de querer continuar recebendo cuidado após a morte de seu ente querido, denotando expectativa de cuidados em seu processo de pesar e luto, dimensão contemplada e 10 requerida nos preceitos dos Cuidados Paliativos, mas que o Serviço de Cuidados Paliativos do CEPON ainda não tem sistematizado. Tal lacuna apontada encaminha para questões de implicações praticas. A equipe de enfermagem de Serviço de Cuidados Paliativos percebe-se cuidando do familiar cuidador do idoso com câncer em fase terminal quando atende a todos os cuidados básicos necessários do paciente, quando realiza um cuidado que transcende o cuidado geral e através da completude do cuidado: cuidando de quem fica. / This is a qualitative study of the explorative-descriptive nature. It has as proposal to know the significant attributed to families caring for elderly with cancer in the terminal stage and to the care offered by the team of nursing and explore as the nursing team with the service of palliative care perceived which type of care are provided to the family caring for the elderly with cancer in the terminal stage. The study was realized in the center for Oncology Study (CEPON), Institution responsible for the attendance Oncologic of the State of Santa Catarina, and was approved by the committee of ethics of study of this institution. The collection of data was realized during the period from May to October of 2009. It was also used to develop the same semi-structured interview, documented with the families of elderly with cancer in palliative care and with the nursing team of the Service of palliative care. The raised data were organized with the use analysis of technical content of Minayo, with base in presupposition and conceptions in the principles of palliative care (2002) and Watson Transperson theory of care. Giving-up the extension and coverage of nursing in its professional humanistic mission with elderly with cancer and his family in difficult moments and suffering in the terminal stage of the disease. Also contemplated the convergence expressed by the experience of the family in terms of perception and significant given to the process of care of the family of the sick elderly and also to be cared for at the same time by nurses. The families that cares for elderly patients with cancer, when giving testimony about the care they received from the Nurses of the Service of palliative care, appointed as something special; do more than the common care. However there were manifestation of wanting to continue receiving care after death of their beloved, raising expectation of care in their process of grief and mourning, contemplated dimension required in the precepts of palliative care, but which the Service of Palliative Care of CEPON is not yet systematized. The gap appointed 12 towards the questions of practical implications. The nursing team of the service of palliative care perceives that care for the family caring for the elderly with cancer in the terminal stage when attend to all necessary basics care of the patient, when realize care that transcend the general care and through the completeness of care: caring for the ones left behind.
