Previous issue date: 2008-02 / Este estudo busca identificar articulações entre a questão dos serviços prestados pela natureza, essenciais à manutenção e reprodução da vida na terra, e a agricultura que se desenvolve em regime de economia familiar. Para tanto, foram analisados os resultados preliminares do Programa de Desenvolvimento Sustentável da Produção Familiar Rural da Amazônia (PROAMBIENTE) e discutida a experiência de Pagamento por Serviços Ambientais (PSA) na Costa Rica. No caso da Amazônia, destaca-se o papel das populações tradicionais na conservação da floresta e seu potencial na prestação de serviços ambientais. Quanto mais diversificada e multifuncional for a unidade produtiva, tanto maior será sua contribuição para o equilíbrio ambiental. A análise do PROAMBIENTE revela, de um lado, uma história rica em termos de participação da sociedade civil e, de outro, a ausência de mecanismos que assegurem as condições para o pagamento de serviços ambientais. Já a experiência da Costa Rica em PSA, reconhecida internacionalmente pela capacidade que vem demonstrando de induzir investimentos e de promover a sustentabilidade, aponta fragilidades em termos de participação dos agricultores familiares e das populações indígenas no controle social do processo. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study seeks to identify articulations among the issue of the services provided by the nature, essential to the maintenance and reproduction of the life in the earth, and the agriculture that develops in regime of family economy. For so much, the preliminary results of the Program of Maintainable Development of the Rural Family Production of the Amazon were analyzed (PROAMBIENTE) and discussed the experience of Payment by Environmental Services (PSA) in Costa Rica. In the case of the Amazon, stands out the paper of the traditional populations in the conservation of the forest and its potential in the environmental services rendered. The more diversified and multifunctional is the productive unit; the greater will be its contribution for the environmental balance. The analysis of PROAMBIENTE reveals, on a side, a rich history in terms of participation of the civil society and, the other, the absence of mechanisms that ensure the conditions for the payment of environmental services. The experience of Costa Rica in PSA, recognized internationally by the capacity that is demonstrating of inducing investments and promote the sustainability, indicates weaknesses in terms of participation the family farmers' and the indigenous populations in the social control of the process.
