Previous issue date: 2006 / Priorizando as imagens fotográficas como fontes, elaborou-se a presente dissertação, intitulada História e imagem: a sociedade escrita com a luz. Rio de Janeiro (1840 – 1889). A partir da análise de fotografias da segunda metade do século XIX, este estudo procura perceber a produção do Rio de Janeiro como cidade ao mesmo tempo moderna e pitoresca, bem como da sociedade engendrada nesse espaço. Tal construção resulta do diálogo/confronto entre dois tipos de linguagem: a fotografia, que enfoca a face moderna, e a literatura de viagem, que focaliza o pitoresco/exótico, sem a exclusão de nenhum desses dois aspectos pelos referidos discursos. Além disso, a leitura
atenta de tais fontes nos permitiu compreender a configuração da conduta moderna e civilizada na sociedade carioca, expressa nos modos, modas e costumes dos cariocas, onde parecer era mais importante do que ser. Finalmente, nas mudanças decorrentes da modernização, observa-se a ampliação dos espaços de sociabilidade e socialidade, revelada e também produzida pelas imagens. A ampliação da visibilidade das mulheres, que passam a circular nos espaços públicos antes a elas interditados, foi um dos múltiplos efeitos da modernização. Processo no qual a produção e circulação de imagens foi de grande importância, na medida em que não apenas figuravam cenários/pessoas, mas, sobretudo, ensinavam a figurá-los, educando o olhar do
observador, dos cariocas. ____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation was elaborated prioritising the photographic images as sources and was entitled History and Image: the Society Written with Light. Rio de Janeiro (1840 – 1889). From the analysis of photographs from the second half of the 19th
century this study searches to perceive the production of Rio de Janeiro as a modern and
picturesque city at the same time, as well as of the society engendered in this space.
This construction results from the dialogue/confrontation between two kinds of
languages: the photography which focuses the modern side, and the travel literature which focuses the picturesque/exotic, without the exclusion of none of these two aspects by those speeches. Besides, the attentive reading of such sources allowed to comprehend the configuration of the modern and civilized deportment in Rio de Janeiro’s society, expressed by its manners, vogue and customs, where to seem was more important than to be. Finally, in this changes caused by modernization, it is possible to notice the enlargement of the spaces of sociability and sociality, revealed and also produced by the images. The amplification of the visibility of women, who started to circulate in public spaces where they weren’t allowed to transit before was one of the several effects of modernization. A process in which production and circulation of images had a great importance, once they not only figured sceneries/people but especially taught how to figure them, educating the view of the observer – of the Rio de Janeiro’s citizen.
