Este trabalho teve por objetivo refletir acerca do medo a partir da análise da dinâmica de vida que a modernidade nos oferece enquanto um projeto que vem influenciando na formação de nossa subjetividade, na nossa interação e organização social e no direcionamento das nossas ações cotidianas. Na dissertação, esboçamos nosso entendimento sobre o que é a violência – fenômeno crucial para melhor estudar a questão do medo – e o debate que privilegiamos sobre ela. Verificamos, ainda, as representações que se produzem acerca do espaço vivido, muitas vezes “espaços de medo”, que reflete nas formas de apropriação do lugar, particularmente na arquitetura de autoproteção e no refúgio em “enclaves fortificados”, adotados pelos moradores, um dos sintomas do medo urbano. Traçamos uma linha investigativa que buscou mesclar a análise de uma conjuntura mais “global” com circunstâncias mais locais: as percepções dos indivíduos de Marília/SP. Desse modo, investigamos como alguns fenômenos sociais e seus interesses e motivos político econômicos, estão associados a um espaço específico, dentro de uma “atmosfera” mais geral. Assim, tentamos entender o momento em que vivemos, bem como a relação desse momento com a situação e a percepção dos moradores da área urbana de Marília/SP. Uma vez que, embora o fenômeno social representado pelo medo seja uma preocupação universal, o estudo das particularidades e fragmentações locais contribui para a compreensão do processo em escala mais ampla, inclusive pela facilidade de acesso aos dados oficiais, às fontes de pesquisa em geral e à própria população, especialmente no caso do estudo das percepções, no qual a subjetividade do tema exige a produção de dados pelo próprio pesquisador – fonte primária / In the diagnosis of our daily lives, uncertainty and insecurity – and fear as a result - are present factors. This study aimed to reflect on the fear from the analysis of the dynamics of life that modernity offers us as a project that has been influencing the formation of our subjectivity, our interaction, social organization and directing our actions. In the dissertation we also outline our understanding of what is violence – a crucial phenomenon to better study the issue of fear – and the debate about it that are privileged here. We also observed the representations that are produced about the living space, often spaces of fear, which reflects the forms of appropriation of space, particularly in the architecture of self-protection and refuge in “gated communities”, adopted by the residents, a symptom of urban fear. We draw a line that tried mix a “global” investigative analysis with a more local circumstances: the perceptions of Marilia/SP citizens. Thus, we investigated how some social phenomenon and their economic interests and political motives are associated with a specific space within an “atmosphere” more generally. So, we try to understand the moment we live in, as well as the relationship of this moment with the situation and the perception of the urban residents of Marilia/SP. Although the social phenomenon represented by fear is a universal concern, the study of local particularities and fragmentation contributes to understanding the process on a larger scale, including easier access to official data, the sources of research in general and the population itself, especially in the case of the study of perceptions, in which the subjectivity of the theme requires production of data by the researcher himself – primary source
