Várias foram as tentativas governamentais para mudar esse quadro, sendo que no final da década de 1990, foi feita a última grande reformulação no setor, com a privatização de sua estrutura. Passados quinze anos do início deste processo no Brasil, o presente trabalho objetiva contribuir com o debate sobre seus resultados, através de uma exposição histórica do desenvolvimento ferroviário brasileiro, bem como de um levantamento do debate teórico a respeito da participação estatal na área produtiva, e de um estudo empírico dos efeitos da privatização sobre a produção do setor / The railways have always been understood as an efficient option for charges transportation at long distances; however, in Brazil, a continental size country, the investments in the sector were always less then required to keep its development. The Government has made several attempts to change this scenario, and in the end of the 1990´s, the last great change of the sector occurred, by the privatization of this infrastructure. Nowadays, fifteen years since then, this study aims to contribute to the debate about the results of privatization, through a historical exposition of the Brazilian railroad development, as well as a research on the theoretical debate about the state role in the productive sector, and an empirical study concerning the privatization effects on the sector´s production
