Previous issue date: 2000 / Resumo: O basquetebol brasileiro passa por uma fase de transição de gerações. Seus principais ídolos das décadas de 1980 e 1990, em ambos os sexos, estão encerrando ou já encerraram suas atividades como atletas. Apesar do basquetebol feminino ter conseguido importantes conquistas neste final de século XX, o masculino não passa por um bom momento internacionalmente. O número de praticantes desta modalidade está reduzido. São Paulo, estado que há vários anos conquista a maioria dos campeonatos brasileiros, em todas as categorias, tem um número pequeno de participantes, desde a iniciação até o adulto. Isto é verdade tanto nos eventos organizados pela Federação Paulista de Basketball, como também nos das ligas regionais do Interior deste estado, possibilitando uma análise, até certo ponto, negativa sobre o momento atual desta modalidade. Além disso, se a iniciação esportiva deve ser voltada para fins educativos, a participação de um maior número de adolescentes é imprescindível. Deste modo, toma-se necessário encontrar alternativas. A Pedagogia do Esporte possui princípios compatíveis com a linha de pensamento do autor deste estudo. No mesmo, é realizada uma análise crítico-pedagógica sobre os problemas da iniciação no basquetebol paulista e, algumas sugestões são feitas com o fim de sinalizar para uma reversão deste processo. A finalidade é aumentar o número de participantes na modalidade, contribuindo para a formação de futuros cidadãos e na identificação de talentos para as categorias posteriores. Estes objetivos podem ser cumpridos integralmente, pois o Esporte é um importante meio, entre outros, de auxílio na educação dos adolescentes. Existe a necessidade de se refletir sobre o momento atual do basquetebol. Todos os envolvidos nesta questão precisam ser mais atuantes e, além disso, terem acesso a novos conhecimentos, procurando soluções, para que este momento difícil da modalidade seja superado rapidamente / Abstract: Brazilian basketball- passes through a transition phase of generations. 1ts main idols, of the 80's and 90' in both sexes, are almost finishing or have already finished their activities as athletes. Despite the fact that woman basketball has got important conquests in the end of the XX century, man basketball is not having a good moment in the international scenery. The number of players of this sport. is reduced. São Paulo, the state that has won the great majority of the Brazilian championships, has a small number of players in all categories, from beginners to adults. This is true in both the events organized by Paulista Basketball Federation and regional leagues of the 1nland of the state, making possible a negative analysis up to certain point about the moment of this sport. Besides, if the sport initiation must be directed to educational goals, the participation of a higher number of teenagers is very important. In such a way, it is necessary to find alterative. The Sport Pedagogy has principle compatibles with the author thought. In this study a critical-pedagogic analysis is made about the problems of the paulista basketball initiation and also suggests some actions that may point to a change in this process The goal is to increase the number of players of this sport, contributing to the formation of future citizens and to the identification of talents for the more advanced categories. Both objectives can be completely reached, since the sport is an important way, among others, to help in the teenager's education. It's necessary to think about the situation basketball is going through. Everyone who is involved in it must participate more intensively. Besides, they need to have access to the new information, looking for solutions, to more easily overcome this difficult moment of this sport / Mestrado / Mestre em Educação Física
