Previous issue date: 2000 / Resumo: Este trabalho toma por objeto as percepções de adolescentes moradores em bairros periféricos da cidade de Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, sobre a qualidade de suas vidas. A pesquisa utiliza a metodologia qualitativa, entrevistando-se dez adolescentes, com um roteiro semi-estruturado. A análise das entrevistas utiliza o método de abordagem de conteúdo temático, onde se busca a compreensão simbólica da realidade a ser estudada, ancorada na teoria das representações sociais. Os temas da violência e do tráfico e uso de drogas perpassam todo o discurso dos adolescentes entrevistados, desvelando sua interferência em todos os espaços de suas vidas: família, bairro, processo saúde¬doença, instituição escolar, instituição policial. O cerceamento ao lazer, tanto por falta de opções como pela violência, constitui o eixo temático em que a exclusão social e a falta de qualidade de suas vidas são mais explicitadas em seus discursos. O texto constitui-se pelo reconhecimento da co-existência de duas Paratys: a que preenche folhetos e cartões postais e inunda os olhos dos turistas e a que é invisível aos olhares de estrangeiros, e só se desvela para os olhares nativos ou que aprenderam a enxergá-Ia. É desta Paraty oculta que este trabalho fala, narrando os caminhos que uma estrangeira deve trilhar para aprender a torná-Ia visível e poder então apreender a falta de qualidade das vidas que nela acontecem / Abstract: This paper takes as an object the perceptions of some teenagers who live in peripherical neighborhoods in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, about their lives quality. The methodology used in the research is qualitative, interviewing ten teenagers, with a semi-structured syllabus. To analyse the interviews weused the approach method of thematic content, where we search for the symbolic understanding of the reality to be studied, anchored in the social representations theory. The themes concerning violence, use and drug trade, pass over ali the interviewed teenagers speech, unveiling its interference in ali rooms of their lives: family, neighborhood, health-disease process, school and police institutions. The restriction to leisure, either lacking options or violence, constitutes of a thematic axis in which social exclusion and the lack of quality of their lives is more explicit through their speech. The text constitutes itself by the recognition of the coexistence of two different cities within Paraty: the one that fill in folders and postcards and overflow the tourists eyes and another that is invisible to the foreigners, and just unveils to the native eyes or the ones who have learnt how to see it. The paper is about this hidden Paraty, telling the ways a foreigner must wander to learn to make it visible, and then being able to recognize the lack of quality of the lives that happen in it / Mestrado / Mestre em Pediatria
