Previous issue date: 1999-02-12 / The objective of this study is to describe the emotional experiences of persons who hold leadership roles in an organization. The data were obtained from private, individual interviews, during which some requests were made to three managers of a public institution of technological research, endowed with professional profiles of superior intelectual and academic potential. The research is qualitative, adapting the phenomenological method proposed by Giorgi (1985), that consists of steps conducting to a structure of the experience in relation to being a leader. The statements were estimulated by three questions, concerning their professional growth, difficulties and facilities in their trajectory and how they have been living through the demands derived from their functions. The results when compared to the available literature on other researches, permit to conclude that being a leader is a complex lived experience; satisfactory when the proposed goals are achieved and there is actual team cooperation, but when the opposite occurs it can turn into a very deep frustration. Therefore, the leaders should be able to understand the importance of the emotions present in their interpersonal relationships and find more adequate ways of dealing with them. Being a leader demands dedication continuous personal and professional development, and also efficient attitudes toward the opportunities for growth. It makes possible an overall perspective and some control over the whole organization and requires constant positive feedback being given to his work team. The organization should be able to contribute with operational support to the leaders concerning their functions, mainly by providing training programs toward professional development. This research intends to bring a contribution to psychologists and other human resources administrators since it emphasizes the importance of considering leadership from the standpoint of the concrete experience of a person who is functioning as a leader and based on it, define more adequate forms to promote his growth, considering professional and personal dimensions. / Este estudo tem por objetivo descrever as viv?ncias emocionais de pessoas que exercem cargo de lideran?a em uma organiza??o. Os dados foram obtidos atrav?s de entrevistas individuais, com perguntas abertas, dirigidas a tr?s diretores de uma empresa p?blica de pesquisa tecnol?gica, dotados de perfil profissional com potencial intelectual e acad?mico superiores. A pesquisa ? qualitativa, tendo sido adotado o m?todo fenomenol?gico proposto por Giorgi (1985), constando de passos que levam a uma estrutura??o do vivido em rela??o ao exerc?cio da lideran?a. Os depoimentos foram estimulados por tr?s perguntas disparadoras quanto ao desenvolvimento profissional desses l?deres, dificuldades e facilidades nas suas trajet?rias at? os postos ocupados, e como eles se sentem atualmente frente ?s exig?ncias do cargo. Os resultados encontrados, quando comparados com a literatura pesquisada, permitem concluir que o exerc?cio da lideran?a ? a viv?ncia de uma experi?ncia complexa, onde surgem satisfa??es quando se atingem metas propostas e coopera??o da equipe, e frustra??es quando ocorre o contr?rio. Da? a necessidade dos l?deres compreenderem a import?ncia, e procurarem lidar adequadamente, com as emo??es presentes nas rela??es interpessoais. Ser l?der exige do profissional dedica??o, cont?nuo desenvolvimento pessoal e profissional, al?m de atitudes proativas frente ?s oportunidades de crescimento. Propicia vis?o e controle do todo da organiza??o e exige incentivo constante ? sua equipe de trabalho. A organiza??o, por sua vez, deve estar apta a contribuir para o suporte operacional ao l?der em suas atribui??es, principalmente atrav?s de programas de treinamento e desenvolvimento profissional. Esse estudo visa prestar uma contribui??o ? atua??o dos profissionais de psicologia e de administra??o de recursos humanos, na medida em que evidencia a import?ncia de se olhar o l?der atrav?s de seu pr?prio referencial, e a partir deste, definir as formas mais adequadas para promover seu desenvolvimento, consideradas as dimens?es pessoal e profissional.
