It was questioned if Mathematical Modeling can help the students to know the risks caused by the use of alcohol and tobacco, while they
construct their mathematical knowledge. For this purpose, a teaching experiment was done in the classroom, which has developed the math unit referred to the Exponential Function on the following issue: Drugs, specially the use of tobacco and alcohol , having the Mathematical Modeling as the
methodological strategy. The focus was data from students daily routine, with the objective of verifying whether the use of this teaching-learning strategy facilitates or not the assimilation and construction of mathematical knowledge, as well as, the awareness of students about the evil effect caused by these drugs. For this purpose, the investigative steps and procedures proposed by action-research were used, which were divided at the same time in modeling stages. Some descriptive data were collected by means of
questionnaires; two of them were applied at the beginning of the investigation, and a third one at the end. It was also used observation cards. The description and data analysis were done in each of the three instruments, as well as, the comparison of the first with the third one. The development of
the teaching unit was also described. For a better understanding of the graphic behavior of the given function, the Excel spreadsheet was used. At the end of the research it was observed that the students came to know about the risks caused by the use of alcohol and tobacco, and that Mathematical Modeling has contributed significantly for it, while there was the acquisition of mathematical knowledge, which was developed together with the issue approach. / Apresenta-se, nesta dissertação, uma pesquisa qualitativa, voltada à Educação Matemática, desenvolvida em turmas de primeira série, do Ensino Médio, no Colégio Militar de Santa Maria (CMSM). Questionou-se se a Modelagem Matemática pode ajudar os alunos a conhecer os riscos causados pelo uso do álcool e do cigarro, enquanto constroem seus conhecimentos matemáticos. Para tanto, realizou-se, em sala de aula, uma experiência de ensino, em que foi desenvolvida a unidade de Matemática referente à Função Exponencial, abordando-se o tema Drogas, em particular o uso do álcool e do cigarro , tendo como estratégia metodológica a Modelagem Matemática. Deu-se enfoque ao uso de dados oriundos do cotidiano dos estudantes. Com o objetivo de verificar se o emprego dessa estratégia de ensino-aprendizagem facilita tanto a assimilação e a construção de conhecimentos matemáticos, quanto a conscientização dos alunos sobre os efeitos maléficos causados por essas drogas, usaram-se os passos e procedimentos investigativos propostos pela pesquisa-ação, diluídos concomitantemente nas etapas da Modelagem. Foram coletados dados descritivos, usando-se questionários; dois deles foram aplicados no início, e um terceiro no final da investigação. Também se usaram pautas de observação. Fez-se a descrição e análise dos dados coletados em cada um dos três instrumentos, bem como a comparação do primeiro com o terceiro. Descreveu-se também o desenvolvimento da unidade de ensino. Para um melhor entendimento do comportamento gráfico da função estudada, usou-se a planilha Excel. No final da pesquisa, constatou-se que os alunos conheceram os riscos causados pelo uso do álcool e do cigarro e que a Modelagem Matemática contribuiu significativamente para isso, enquanto
houve apropriação de conhecimentos matemáticos, que foram construídos paralelamente à abordagem do tema
