Previous issue date: 2012-09-28 / This study aimed to investigate the violence and its main manifestations in the school environment, based on the conception of teachers and elementary school students of a public school-Bacanga Itaqui Area - Sao Luis / MA. We sought to give visibility to the agents opinion research on violence sometimes resulting in educational space. Thus, the study aimed to investigate the manifestations of violence in schools, identify the most common in school violence, characterize the types of violence and establish a distinction between the terms violence and indiscipline. As a field of research was delimited space that best substantiate the research, ie, a public school located in suburb with a high crime rate. Through the responses of research agents were found different aspects that contribute to school violence, highlighting an instance of intense physical and verbal violence. A very high percentage of students claimed to have been violent in school during the years 2011 and 2012. Depositions of the whole school community involved in the research claim to be students major detonators violence in the school compound, which translates as pejorative language, arguments and beatings. And they point to the relevant causes family breakdown, intolerance, lack of respect for differences and drug trafficking. In focus group technique, however, were appointed acts of violence by teachers against students. We emphasize, finally, the urgent need for initiatives to prevent and reduce violence in a joint action between school, family, community and government. / Este estudo buscou investigar a violência e suas principais formas de manifestação no ambiente escolar, tomando como base a concepção de professores e alunos do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública da Área Itaqui-Bacanga - São Luis/MA. Procuramos, dar visibilidade à opinião dos agentes da pesquisa acerca da violência ora decorrente no espaço educativo. Assim, o estudo teve como objetivos investigar as formas de manifestação da violência na escola, identificar as violências mais comuns na escola, caracterizar os tipos de violência e estabelecer distinção entre os termos violência e indisciplina. Como campo de investigação foi delimitado um espaço que melhor fundamentasse a pesquisa, ou seja, uma escola pública localizada em bairro periférico com alto índice de criminalidade. Através das respostas dos agentes da pesquisa foram constatados aspectos diferenciados que contribuem para a violência escolar, com destaque para uma ocorrência intensa de violência física e verbal. Um percentual bem elevado de alunos afirmou ter havido violência na escola durante os anos de 2011 e 2012. Depoimentos de toda a comunidade escolar envolvida na pesquisa afirmam ser os alunos os principais detonadores da violência no recinto escolar, o que se traduz por linguagem pejorativa, discussões e agressões físicas. E apontam como causas relevantes a desestruturação familiar, a intolerância, a falta de respeito às diferenças e o tráfico de drogas. Na técnica do grupo focal, entretanto, foram apontados atos de violência de professores contra alunos. Enfatizamos, por fim, a necessidade premente de iniciativas de prevenção e redução da violência numa ação conjunta entre escola, família, comunidade e poder público.
