Previous issue date: 2012-02-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / During the firsts centuries of colonization the more countryside areas of the Portuguese America were called deserts by the inhabitants of the urban centers by the shores. Those areas were called empty, inhospitable, and their inhabitants called savages, uncultured and barbarians. And, although those areas were taken by the colonizing process through the establishment of villages and urban centers, by the end of the XVIIIth Century the countryside still kept the image of loneliness in the eyes of the shores inhabitants. Considering this scenery, the present thesis objectives to go beyond the generalizing concepts constructed about the countryside areas and to analyze the territorial construction, the uses of space, the different types of household and the production and handling of instruments by the colonizers that managed to arrive to the frontiers of Ararobá region in Pernambuco during the passage of the XVIIIth to the XIXth centuries. The focus of this study is the settlement of Alagoinhas or Lagoinhas, by then under the jurisdiction of the village of Cimbres. It is based on different types of sources: travelers chronicles, postmortem inventories, artifacts and material culture, besides the occupation forms and inhabitation of these territory. / Durante os primeiros séculos do período colonial, as áreas mais ao interior do continente da América portuguesa eram taxadas pelos habitantes dos núcleos urbanos do litoral como desertas, vazias, inóspitas, e seus habitantes originais eram designados como selvagens, bárbaros, incultos. Mesmo sendo tomado pelo processo colonizador, através do estabelecimento de vilas e povoados em fins do século XVIII, ainda assim o interior mantinha a imagem de solidão aos olhos dos habitantes do litoral. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo ir além dos conceitos generalizantes sobre o interior e analisar a formação territorial, o uso dos espaços, os tipos de habitação, a elaboração e manejo de artefatos pelos colonizadores que chegaram aos sertões de Ararobá de Pernambuco, durante a passagem do século XVIII para o XIX. Tomou-se como estudo de caso o povoado “Alagoinhas” ou “Lagoinhas”, então pertencente à influência jurídico-administrativa da vila de Cimbres, buscando em diferentes tipos de fontes (relatos de cronistas, inventários post-mortem, cultura material e diversos tipos de documentos) as formas de ocupação e habitação desse território.
