Objetivos: Avaliar o efeito do treinamento contínuo (TC) ou intervalado (TI) sobre a pressão arterial (PA), rigidez arterial (RA) e qualidade de vida (QV) de hipertensos. Métodos: 65 pacientes hipertensos, randomizados para TC (n=26), TI (n=26) ou controle sedentário (C; n=13), tiveram PA, RA e QV avaliadas no início e final do estudo. PA também foi avaliada após primeira sessão de TC e TI. Resultados: Observou-se redução na PA pós uma sessão de TC e TI. Após treinamento, a PA foi reduzida apenas nos indivíduos com níveis basais mais elevados, independentemente do exercício realizado. Houve melhora na RA e QV após TI, mas não após TC. O grupo C não apresentou diferença significativa nas variáveis estudadas. Conclusão: TC e TI apresentaram benefícios para PA de hipertensos. O TI também melhorou RA e QV desses indivíduos, podendo ser uma alternativa adjuvante no tratamento da hipertensão arterial / Purpose: To assess the effects of continuous (CT) and interval (IT) training on the blood pressure (BP), arterial stiffness (AS) and quality of life (QL) of hypertensives. Methods: 65 hypertensive patients randomized to CT (n=26), IT (n=26) or control group (CG; n=13), had BP, AS and QL measured at the beginning and end of the study. BP were also measured after the first session of CT and IT. Results: BP was reduced after the first session of CT and IT. The physical training reduced BP only in the subjects with higher basal values, independently of the exercise type. AS and QL were improved only after IT, but not after CT. The CG did not show significant difference on any variable. Conclusion: CT and IT showed benefits to BP of hypentensives. IT also improved AS and QL of these patients, showing to be an effective nonpharmacological treatment to arterial hypertension
