Previous issue date: 2010 / Nowadays countless cities and towns search for their identity and patrimonial repertoire, a process that reveals administrators’ and communities’ wishes of belonging to the capital or the land “of something”. Following this same trend, the city of Bom Jesus (RS, Brazil) has been attempting to establish itself as Land of Muleteering, a movement that involves and is supported by the local community, combining the search for memories and historical references to be found in the past with the construction of identity and implementation of patrimonial repertoires in the present. This is the process studied here, the development of the Land of Muleteering. The present work addresses this construction based on concepts such as memory, identity and patrimony, among others, in a process that also involves expectations about the future which are based on the development of local and regional tourism. To achieve that, the research tackles different manifestations in which both muleteers and muleteering are represented by various agents and in several areas of the city of Bom Jesus. Such manifestations guide the construction, the attribution of meaning and the advertising of the Land of Muleteering. Within this context the creation of elements of contemporary material culture asserts its role as representation of an idealized past for and within different objectives and contexts of communication and consumption. / Na contemporaneidade inúmeras cidades buscam sua identidade e repertório patrimonial, um processo em que administradores e comunidades almejam pertencer à capital ou à terra de alguma coisa. Nessa mesma busca, a cidade de Bom Jesus (RS) vem constituindo-se como a Terra do Tropeirismo, um movimento que ao envolver e ser fomentado por parte da comunidade local é consolidado na busca de memórias e referenciais históricos centrados no tempo passado, na construção da identidade e na ativação de repertórios patrimoniais no tempo presente. Esse é o processo aqui abordado, a construção da Terra do Tropeirismo. Trata-se de uma elaboração pautada, neste trabalho, a partir de conceitos como: memória, identidade, patrimônio, entre outros; num processo que envolve, igualmente, expectativas de futuro centradas no desenvolvimento do turismo local e regional. Para tanto, busquei abordar diferentes manifestações em que tropeiros e tropeirismo são representados, por distintos agentes e em diversos espaços na cidade de Bom Jesus. Trata-se de manifestações que pautam a construção, a atribuição de significados e a divulgação da Terra do Tropeirismo. Um contexto em que a criação de elementos da cultura material contemporânea toma lugar na cena dessa construção, como representação do passado idealizado em diferentes objetivos e contextos de criação, comunicação e consumo.
