The article comprises a reflection on psychotherapy as an art and as science its definition and the ethical and methodological issues with regard to psychotherapy research, including the therapist's and patient's variables, process variables and design variables.A review of results from research on the therapeutic method, the patient, the therapist and time as independent variables, arriving to a series of conclusions. / El artículo reflexiona sobre la psicoterapia como ciencia y como arte, su definición, las consideraciones éticas y metodológicas de la investigación en psicoterapia, incluyendo variables del terapeuta, del paciente, del proceso y del diseño. Se presentan, además resultados de una revisión de investigaciones sobre el método terapéutico, sobre el paciente, sobre el terapeuta y sobre el tiempo como variables independientes, arribándose a una serie de conclusiones.
