Orientador: Sidney Barbosa / Banca: Wilton José Marques / Banca: Ozíris Borges Filho / Resumo: Este trabalho busca analisar o romance Relato de um certo Oriente, do escritor amazonense Milton Hatoum, com o intuito de averiguar o que o caracteriza como um romance brasileiro contemporâneo. Para tanto, serão estudadas as categorias da narrativa - ação, tempo, espaço, foco narrativo e personagens na obra - com a finalidade de se entender a construção do romance, realizada pelo autor. Com o uso singular dessas categorias, Milton Hatoum foi capaz de montar uma estrutura narrativa que remonta ao épico e em quase nada lembra o modelo tradicional do romance burguês. O diálogo singular estabelecido entre as personagens, a reflexão, a escritura e um certo mistério voltam à cena da literatura brasileira contemporânea nesta obra e proporcionam uma experiência estética diferenciada ao leitor. O escritor constrói aqui uma história retalhada que, à primeira vista, não faz muito sentido porque o leitor está, na verdade, em todo o romance, invadindo a correspondência alheia, pois, cheio de curiosidade, lê o relato que a narradora-personagem escreve e envia a seu irmão. / Abstract: This paper intends to analyze the amazonense writer Milton Hatoum first novel Relato de um certo Oriente with the objective of checking what makes it a contemporary Brazilian novel. In order to do that, it will be studied the categories of narrative: action, setting, narrator, point of view and characters in the work. They will allow us to understand the built of the novel, made by the author. By using theses categories in a singular way, Milton Hatoum was able to set a narrative structure that reminds us of the epic and it nearly doesn't remember the traditional bourgeois model of novel. The dialogue set between the characters, the reflection, the writing and a certain mystery come back to the contemporary Brazilian literature scene in this work and give a different esthetic experience to the reader. The writer builds here a retailed story that, at first sight, doesn't make much sense because the reader is actually invading, during the entire novel, someone else's mail. He curiously reads the report that the narrator-character writes and sends to her brother. / Mestre
