Introduction: Intestinal stoma is a surgically created opening that moves the end point of the bowel to the outside of the abdominal wall. Intestinal stoma can be used for various health conditions. Self-image and body perception are two factors associated with living with an intestinal stoma, the self-image describes the totality of an individual's identity while body perception describes the mental image people have towards their body. Aim: The purpose of the literature study was to describe how self-image and body perception are perceived to be affected in adults living with an intestinal stoma. Method: The literature study is based on 10 qualitative articles. The articles were searched in the databases Medline via PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL. Results: The study resulted in three main themes. An altered body, which described adults' experiences of altered views of their bodies and feelings of loss of bodily functions. A new life situation described the challenges that people experienced in everyday life, which affected the self-image and body perception as well as the positive impact that a stoma had on some people. Sexuality and relationship to others described how the stoma led to changed relationships and how this affected the individual's self-image and body perception. Conclusion: An intestinal stoma causes significant physical changes that affect the person's self-image and body perception and challenges the person's identity. Studies show that support, information, and self-care can help the ostomate maintain a positive self-image and body perception.
