”Jag tänker på fred... Samtidigt krig” : Gymnasieelevers syn på religion som fenomen / ”I think of peace... But, at the same time war” : Students view on religion as a phenomenon in upper secondary school

The aim of this essay is to examine students view on religion as a phenomenon in upper secondary school. The aim has been examined through 8 semistructured interviews and a survey consisting of 64 responses. The conclusions drawn from these methods is firstly that students consider religion to have a role in conflicts. Some students consider religion to be a cause of conflicts and some consider religion to be used as a means in conflicts. At the same time religion is also viewed as a source of solidarity, peace, moral and meaningfulness making students view on religion very complex and nuanced. Furthermore, the students thought of religion as faith and beliefs in one or several gods rather than religious actions and participation in religious institutions. The students therefore think of religion in the terms of orthodoxy rather than orthopraxy. There is also a comprehension that religion may be interpreted and expressed in various different ways making students view on religion very individualistic.
