The purpose of the master thesis was to understand, based on participant experiences, the significance of digital tools for the relationship between participants and social workers within a municipal labour market program. This was done by analysing participants experience of recognition when using digital tools. To meet the purpose of the study a qualitative case study was conducted within a municipal labour market program that uses digital tools as a part of the intervention to make unemployed individuals self-sufficient. Focusing on participant experience, 10 semi-structured interviews was conducted with participants enrolled in the labour market program. The empirical material was theoretically analysed using Axel Honneths (2003) theory of recognition and the concept of social excklusion. The result shows that digital tools have little importance for the relationship between participants and social workers. However, the digital tools were a complement to the intervention as well as the work conducted by the staff. The participants experienced recognition, although the recognition was relation-bound to the actions performed by the staff. While recognition may have been experienced it was temporary during the time of the intervention. Little suggest that the participants experienced recognition in a long term. Nor does the result suggest that experiencing recognition does improve the participants possibilities to enter the labour market.
