Research has shown that while promotion towards sexual health should be included in social work, there is a lack of knowledge on how social workers attempt to work with this subject. Furthermore, research has stated that while the social worker’s knowledge about sexual health generally gives positive outcomes for the target group, social work students feel unequipped in this subject as a result of inadequate educational preparation. The aim of the study was to examine how social workers in contact with youth experience working with aspects of sexual health in regard to the dialogue with the client as well as organizational structures. The respondents in this study were social workers from six different municipalities in Sweden employed at public social service offices who in their work come in contact with youth. As the study was based on ten semi-structured interviews the main questions centered on their experiences of working with youth’s sexual health. The interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis and seven main themes were identified: Awareness of vulnerability, Social services mission, or not?, Work within and outside of the boundaries, The dialogue as a possible opening, Personal conditions that dominate, Driving spirits versus organizational responsibility and BBIC as a support. Through thematic analysis it was distinguished that experiences of being comfortable, knowledge and organizational support played a significant role in how social workers were able to carry out working with aspects of sexual health with youth. The occurrence of an established relationship between client and social worker was also found to be of importance in how social workers approach sexual health in dialogue with youth.
