Background: The goal of good palliative care is to alleviate suffering and increase quality of life in patients. Impaired oral health indicates poorer health-related quality of life. Inadequate oral care results in poorer oral health and oral symptoms. A multidisciplinary team means increased competence within the team and better oral care for the patient. Purpose: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of oral care for patients in palliative care. Method: A general literature review consisting of eleven nursing science articles that were analyzed. Seven were qualitative and four were quantitative. Results: Nurses' experiences of oral care in palliative care are compiled under three themes; Obstacles to performing oral care, Education in oral care and Support for performing oral care. The first theme demonstrates different perspectives on obstacles to perform oral care. The second theme notes a knowledge gap, which requires more training and collaboration with oral care personnel. The third theme indicates the need for support to facilitate the nurse's work with oral care. Conclusion: Nurses' experiences show that obstacles need to be overcome, supplementary education and the use of aids. This creates additional conditions for nurses to carry out the nursing aspect of oral care in palliative care.
