I den här uppsatsen har det övergripande syftet varit att genom ett kritiskt perspektiv granska och problematisera det innehåll som presenteras i samband med arbete för ökad jämställdhet. Det utvalda materialet som analyserats har författats och publicerats av fackförbundet Byggnads respektive branschföreningen Byggcheferna. Med hjälp av Bacchis metod ”what’s the problem represented to be?” utreds hur dessa aktörer definierar och förstår jämställdhet, samt hur de motiverar behovet av ökad jämställdhet inom byggbranschen. De frågeställningar som besvaras utöver detta är vilka specifika antaganden som ligger till grund problemrepresentationerna, samt vad som förblir oproblematiserat. Studien har en socialkonstruktionistisk ansats och tar med stöd av Foucault grepp om maktrelationer och diskurs. Även Ackers begrepp ’ojämställdhetsregimer’ har nyttjats. Påvisade brister i det analyserade materialet är avsaknaden av material som benämner kvinnors svårigheter att avancera och nå ledande positioner – något tidigare forskning kategoriserar som centralt för att nå ökad jämställdhet inom byggnadsindustrin. Resultatet visar hur strävan efter ökad jämställdhet och fler kvinnliga byggnadsarbetare motiveras genom marknadens behov och branschens vinstintresse, något som tyder på inverkan av en neoliberal diskurs. Fokuset på den skadliga machokulturen leder till att strukturella skillnader ges mindre utrymme, då explicita åtgärder placeras på en individnivå. Den binära förståelsen av kön, exempelvis när särskilda egenskaper sammankopplas med könstillhörighet, får avgörande effekt för hur aktörerna porträtterar män och kvinnor – vilket indikerar ett behov av utökad genusteori i arbetet. / In this essay the main purpose has been to examine and problematize the content which is presented within work for increased gender equality through a critical perspective. The selected material that has been analysed is authored and published by the trade union Byggnads and the industry association Byggcheferna. By using Bacchi’s method ”what’s the problem represented to be?” how these actors define and understands gender equality, as well as how they motivate the need for increased gender equality within the construction industry, is investigated. The additional research questions include identifying underlying presuppositions or assumptions, and finally what is left unproblematic within the problem representations. The study has a social constructionist perspective and finds support by using theoretical terms from Foucault, and his specific understanding of power relations and discourse. Another theory that has been applied to the analysis is Ackers ‘inequality regimes’. The material is identified as lacking material which proclaims women’s struggles in advancing and reaching positions of power – something that is constituted through previous research as a key issue to reach higher levels of gender equality. The results show how the ambition of increased gender equality and more female construction workers is motivated by and through market needs, as well as the industry’s profit interest. Pointing to a high grade of neo-liberal influence. The focus on what the authors define as ‘as a harmful masculine culture’ leads to structural differences and problems being overlooked, since explicit measures are positioned on an individual level. The binary understanding of the sexes, for example when certain characteristics are connected to and described as determined by gender, has crucial effects for how these actors portray men and women – indicating the need for an extended usage of gender theory in their work.
