Vårdpersonals erfarenheter av mötet med barnsom lever med övervikt : En litteraturstudie

Background: Overweight among children is a growing issue in today's society. This issue isbased on a changed weight standard and an increased intake of calories. This leads to animpaired physical and mental health among the patient group which increases the need ofknowledge for healthcare professionals that encounter overweight children.Purpose: The aim for this study was to examine the experiences of healthcare professionalsfrom meetings within primary care with overweight children (2-18 years) and their parents.Method: A literature study with a descriptive design and qualitative approach based on 11qualitative original articles from the databases PubMed and CINAHL.Findings: Four categories were distinguished from the experience; fear, lack of knowledge,obstacles within treatment and tools. The fear was founded in a concern about stigmatizingthe child's weight and betraying the child and family's trust to healthcare. A lack ofknowledge was experienced in terms of limitation regarding diagnosis and treatment options.Obstacles within treatment was based on a lack of self-awareness regarding the issue andtherefore limited motivation for change. Tools and methods were highlighted to facilitatediscussions and treatments regarding the overweight issue.Conclusion: The meeting with overweight children and their parents is a complex task thatcontains several fears and obstacles for the healthcare professionals. This situation requiresan increased knowledge among the healthcare professionals, adequate tools and individualadaptation for a successful treatment.
