[pt] O trabalho desenvolvido se debruça sobre a habilidade singular de Paulo
Barreto na compreensão das forças em disputa no processo de formação do campo
intelectual carioca da Primeira República e sobre como esta o possibilitou construir
para si mesmo a representação – e a forma textual – a partir da qual se inseriria
nessa contenda. Uma vez inserido, atuaria na mediação entre a cultura elitizada dos
salões e a cultura popular das ruas. Para cumprir seus objetivos, a pesquisa parte da
compreensão da existência da disputa entre uma elite que se queria cosmopolita e
europeizada e diversos grupos heterogêneos e fragmentados que resistiam ao
avanço destas através de mecanismos outros que não a política institucional. A
partir deste entendimento, a investigação se debruça sobre a vida e a obra de Paulo
Barreto, homem gordo, nascido na fronteira entre os dois universos em disputa, de
família interracial e que era compreendido como homossexual por seus
contemporâneos. O trabalho identifica os estigmas a que estava sujeito o autor e a
representação por ele conduzida na busca de mitigar os efeitos destes, esta que deu
origem ao seu alter-ego público pelo qual ficou conhecido, o João do Rio. Neste
personagem, mirando em seu projeto de ascensão social e financeira, o autor
incorporou em sua representação símbolos diversos que o identificavam com as
imagens representadas pelas elites locais, o que, ao lado de sua habilidade de
articulação de seu capital social e das oportunidades que surgiam a partir dos
avanços tecnológicos que chegavam à cidade, possibilitou a concretização de boa
parte de seu projeto – não sem sofrer intensa resistência dos círculos intelectuais e
das elites políticas locais. / [ca] The work here developed focuses on Paulo Barreto s unique ability to
understand the forces in dispute in the process of formation of the intellectual field
in Rio de Janeiro during the First Republic. It also analyses how this enabled him
to build for himself the representation – and the genre – which would allow him to
be included be included in this controversy. Once inserted in the field, his work
would serve as a mediator between the elitist culture of the salons and the popular
culture of the streets. To fulfill its objectives, the research starts by understanding
the existence of a quarrel between an elite that wanted to be cosmopolitan and
Europeanized and several heterogeneous and fragmented groups that resisted the
advance of these elites through mechanisms other than institutional politics. Based
on this understanding, the investigation focuses on the life and work of Paulo
Barreto, a fat man, born on the border between the two universes in dispute, from
an interracial family and who was understood as a homosexual by his
contemporaries. The work identifies the stigmas to which the author was subjected,
and the representation conducted by him in attempt to mitigate its effects. The
representation is impersonated by his public alter-ego, by which he became known,
João do Rio. In his project of social and financial ascension, the author incorporated
in his character symbols that identified him with the images impersonated by the
local elites, which, alongside his ability to articulate his social capital and the
opportunities that arose from technological advances, enabled the realization of a
good part of his project – not without him suffering intense resistance from
intellectual circles and local political elites.
