[pt] DE PAULO BARRETO A JOÃO DO RIO: UM INTELECTUAL CARIOCA NA REPÚBLICA VELHA / [ca] FROM PAULO BARRETO TO JOÃO DO RIO: A CARIOCA INTELLECTUAL IN THE OLD REPUBLIC

LIGIA THOMAZ VIEIRA LEITE 06 November 2023 (has links)
[ca] The work here developed focuses on Paulo Barreto s unique ability to understand the forces in dispute in the process of formation of the intellectual field in Rio de Janeiro during the First Republic. It also analyses how this enabled him to build for himself the representation – and the genre – which would allow him to be included be included in this controversy. Once inserted in the field, his work would serve as a mediator between the elitist culture of the salons and the popular culture of the streets. To fulfill its objectives, the research starts by understanding the existence of a quarrel between an elite that wanted to be cosmopolitan and Europeanized and several heterogeneous and fragmented groups that resisted the advance of these elites through mechanisms other than institutional politics. Based on this understanding, the investigation focuses on the life and work of Paulo Barreto, a fat man, born on the border between the two universes in dispute, from an interracial family and who was understood as a homosexual by his contemporaries. The work identifies the stigmas to which the author was subjected, and the representation conducted by him in attempt to mitigate its effects. The representation is impersonated by his public alter-ego, by which he became known, João do Rio. In his project of social and financial ascension, the author incorporated in his character symbols that identified him with the images impersonated by the local elites, which, alongside his ability to articulate his social capital and the opportunities that arose from technological advances, enabled the realization of a good part of his project – not without him suffering intense resistance from intellectual circles and local political elites.

[en] JOÃO DO RIOS CINEMATOGRAPHIES: THE CHRONICLE-REPORT AND THE LETTER CINEMATOGRAPHY / [pt] OS CINEMATOGRAPHOS DE JOÃO DO RIO: A CRÔNICA-REPORTAGEM E A CINEMATOGRAFIA DAS LETRAS

ALINE DA SILVA NOVAES 09 February 2010 (has links)
[en] This paper focuses on the study of the column Cinematographo, published weekly from August 11, 1907 until December 19, 1910 in Gazeta de Notícias, and its homonym book (1909), both Paulo Barreto’s publications. Considering that the book is not just a collection of published columns in the newspaper, what may seem the case at first, this work wants to reflect about the non-inclusion of such columns in his book. This paper pretends to comprehend and, moreover, investigate the presence of the kind of media, which becomes a mark of the difference between what the author considers to be newspaper work and what he believes to be art. This way, his book reveals a conception that transcends the journalistic field and the mass culture: by changing the media used, he manages to transform the chosen chronicles from the newspaper frailty to art. Besides analyzing the representations of the Federal District in João do Rio’s columns during an era of great changes, it will be possible to study the Cinematographo’s organization and its relation to the published chronicles in the newspaper. Also, it may be possible to verify that the change of media – from the newspaper to the book – modifies their meaning. It is, therefore, an effort in order to understand the letter cinematography.

[en] JOÃO DO RIO AND HIS CINEMATOGRAPHS: THE HYBRIDISM OF THE CHRONICLE IN THE NARRATIVE OF RIO DE JANEIRO S BELLE ÉPOQUE / [pt] JOÃO DO RIO E SEUS CINEMATOGRAPHOS: O HIBRIDISMO DA CRÔNICA NA NARRATIVA DA BELLE ÉPOQUE CARIOCA

ALINE DA SILVA NOVAES 14 September 2016 (has links)
[en] The thesis João do Rio and his cinematographs: the hybridism of the chronicle in the narrative of Rio de Janeiro s belle époque draws on the study of the possibilities of the chronicle, focusing its analysis on the Cinematographo column, weekly published from August 11th, 1907 through December 19th, 1910 in Gazeta de Notícias, and on the homonymous book (1909), by Paulo Barreto (João do Rio). A diagnosis of the texts issued in the periodical serves as a starting point for the investigation of the hybridism of the aforementioned genre. Not only does the author s chronicle attribute meaning to a period of intense transformations and resignify the city which is expected to be modern, the author s genre also takes on the feature of a historical record, cultural and political review, and, eventually, allows itself to be contaminated by the cinema and introduces the cinematographic chronicle. Thus, the column and the homonymous book highlight distinctions. Although both texts look similar at first glance, the occurrence of the chronicle-report genre is observed in Gazeta whereas the book reveals a cinematography of words. Moreover, this cinematography makes it evident that the book does not stand as a compilation of the texts published in the column, as this research unveils. Besides analyzing the possibilities of the chronicle and its representations in the former federal capital, this thesis examines the organization of the volume Cinematographo and its correlations with the chronicles published in the periodical, in light of the theory of Materiality.

[fr] JOÃO DO RIO: UN HÉROS DANS LE LABYRINTHE DE LA VIE MODERNE / [pt] JOÃO DO RIO: UM HERÓI NO LABIRINTO DA VIDA MODERNA

DAYANE DA SILVA NASCIMENTO 12 June 2014 (has links)

[en] The city of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the first decade of the twentieth century and its cultural environment are considered as key partners for this thesis, which is concerned to think three wide themes from the relationship between different actors and the city. The first bundle articulates three movements: an attempt in Rio, to seek the identity or specific features; recap some points presented in academic literature that most directly contributed to elaborate distinctions between the space of the capital and city places; and reflections on the possible links between projects of civilization, culture and progress during reforms led by President Rodrigues Alves and the mayor Pereira Passos, from differing views over the city and the capital. The second line works a ratio of four movements: first, the chronicler João do Rio and the city of Rio de Janeiro are placed facing each other as subjects, whereas both interfere with one another on the built each other s vision; in the three following movements, there are dialogues established between João do Rio and some of his contemporaries, watching the game waving borders between some of the systems of interpretation. The third and final axis consists of three movements: the first one interweaves the fields of photography and memory; the next inquires on the statutes that photography has taken since its appearance in the nineteenth century; and the third notes the job of the photographer Augusto Malta as a privileged spot to list the changes that happened in the city, so some photos of Central Avenue and snack bar sets are analyzed in order to distinguish, again, some views on modernity constructed in Rio.

[en] JOÃO DO RIO ON HIS WAY TO ATLÂNTIDA: FOR A LUSO-BRAZILIAN APPROACH / [pt] JOÃO DO RIO A CAMINHO DA ATLÂNTIDA: POR UMA APROXIMAÇÃO LUSO-BRASILEIRA

CRISTIANE DAVILA LYRA ALMEIDA 27 July 2010 (has links)
[en] The Luso-Brazilian magazine Atlântida, created by the Rio de Janeiroborn journalist and columnist Paulo Barreto (João do Rio) and his Portuguese partner and friend João de Barros, in 1915, intended to act as an intellectual bridge that could reconnect the two continents, bringing together Brazil and Portugal. At that time, especially in the second decade of the 20th century, there was a new phase of antilusitanism in Rio de Janeiro, as had already occurred in Floriano Peixoto’s administration, following the Announcement of the Republic. The new Jacobins preached the full nationalization of several different segments, from the press to the commerce, from the theater to the Navy, and saw the attempts of approach, especially the economic approach, as imperialist bursts of Portugal. The peak of the opposition to the Portuguese presence in the national life occurred in Epitacio Pessoa’s administration, a crucial moment of intervention of João do Rio. In the column entitled Bilhete, in the newspaper A Pátria, of which he was director and full partner, he preached the luso-brazilianness and fiercely fought against those who stirred up the hate towards the Portuguese and advocate for a xenophobic nationalism. In the 40’s and 50’s, some decades after Paulo Barreto’s death, in 1921, friends tried to rehabilitate his memory, both in Rio and Lisboa.

[en] This work aims to analyze the column Cinematographo, written by Joe, one of Paulo Barreto s pseudonyms, which was published in Gazeta de Notícias from August 1907 to December 1910. The manuscripts analysis allows to set up the difference between the column and the homonym book, issued in 1909. The study also tries to show the author s unique narrative in this sequence of texts and the importance of the chronicle and of the press in the definition of the cultural scene of Belle Époque in Rio de Janeiro city under two aspects: as a way of literati professionalization and as part of the effort of comprehension of the modernization experience lived by the federal capital in the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis reveals the writer s interest in the modern life, as allows to assert that the technical progress, characteristic of the period, is present both in form and sense of these chronicles.
