O trabalho trata de diversos aspectos relacionados ao universo do futebol em São Paulo, entre 1910 e meados da década de 1930. O fio condutor das discussões é a trajetória, como atleta, de Friedenreich, considerado o primeiro grande ídolo esportivo brasileiro. O percurso é longo, das várzeas ao aristocrático Paulistano; das ruas da cidade à seleção brasileira. Como eixos centrais da dissertação, a relação entre o futebol e o mundo urbano e moderno em construção na cidade; e a possibilidade de se vislumbrar, a partir dos campos de futebol, a forma como a questão da identidade se apresentava na metrópole que nascia. Parte-se do pressuposto que o futebol é elemento integrante de um contexto social mais amplo e, como tal, é capaz de apresentar, refletir, reproduzir e refratar uma série de fenômenos próprios do universo do qual é parte integrante. Naquela cidade que se urbanizava e crescia de forma bastante desordenada e, ainda, buscava modernizar-se tomando como apoio algumas idéias e práticas preferencialmente trazidas da Europa, encontra-se o futebol. Dos campos enlameados e improvisados dos subúrbios aos estádios dos clubes da elite, Friedenreich esteve presente nos diversos espaços sociais da cidade, revelando muitos dos dilemas existentes no país naquele momento. A forma como aquele que foi tido como o primeiro Rei do Futebol empreende sua trajetória é capaz de jogar luz sobre questões fundamentais de seu tempo. Fried pode, afinal, nos dizer um pouco até que ponto éramos modernos, ou se ainda vivíamos sob os velhos princípios do passado; e, ainda, nos mostrar em que bases as identidades paulista e brasileira estavam sendo forjadas naquele momento, a fim de dar alguma forma e coesão àqueles tempos e lugares em transformação / This paper deals with several aspects related to São Paulo´s soccer practice, between 1910 and the middle of the 1930´s. The guiding line of discussion is the athletic career of Fridenreich, regarded as the first major brazilian sports idol. It´s a long travel, from the amateur soccer fields to the aristocratic club Paulistano; from the city streets to the Brazil National Football Team. The main axis of this dissertation are the relationship between soccer and the modern urban world being constructed in the city; and the chance to foresee, from the football pitch, the way the question of identity was presenting itself in the burdgeoning metropolis. We begin from the assumption that soccer is part of a wider social context and, as such, is able of represent, reflect, reproduce and refract a series of phenomena common to its own universe. Soccer was found in a city that grew and went through urbanization in a rather unorganized fashion, trying to achieve modernization by borrowing ideas and practices preferably from Europe. From the muddy and improvised fields of the suburbia to the elite club´s stadiums, Friedenreich was present in several social strata of the city, revealing many of the dilemmas existing in the nation at the time. The fashion in wich he who was regarded as the first King of Football makes its way can enlighten fundamental questions of its time. Fried can, after all, tell us a little about to wich extent we were modern, or if we still lived under the old tenets of our past; and even show us upon wich bases the paulista and brazilian identities was then being forged, to give shape and cohesion to those changing times and places
