Na Grécia Antiga, a prática esportiva, mesmo antes de ser vista como objeto pedagógico, era uma forma de transmissão cultural, tinha caráter sagrado e buscava celebrar a honra dos deuses. Independentemente dos motivos da criação desses eventos ? os Jogos Públicos, certo era que predominava seu cunho religioso, e como tal, impunham a seus participantes uma série de normas a serem seguidas. Com o tempo, os Jogos de Olímpia passaram a ganhar maior importância até chegar ao ponto de ser o acontecimento central de toda a cultura grega, interrompiam-se as guerras e uma multidão se dirigia a Olímpia para apreciar os Jogos Olímpicos. Eram nestas ocasiões que se conheciam os novos heróis, o momento em que o homem chegava mais perto dos deuses, buscando sua transcendência. Com o tempo, a condição religiosa foi sendo suplantada pelo espetáculo propriamente dito, atingindo seu auge logo após o início do domínio romano, e quase imediato declínio. Com isso, este trabalho tem como objetivo fazer uma reflexão sobre os motivos que direcionaram os antigos rituais a se tornarem os grandes Jogos, apoiado principalmente na mitologia que os sustentam. Buscar-se-á discutir os motivos que levaram o povo grego a tamanha exaltação frente a essa que foi, talvez, a mais importante manifestação social de todos os tempos / In the Ancient Greece, the sportive practice, before being seen as pedagogical object, was a form of cultural transmission, had sacred character and looked for to celebrate the honor of the gods. Independently of the reasons of the creation of these events - the Public Games, certain were that predominated its religious way, and as such, for the participants a series of norms was imposed. With the time, the Games of Olympia had started to gain greater importance until arriving at the point of being the central event of all the Greek culture, the wars were interrupted and a lot of people went directed to Olympia to appreciate the Olympics Games. They were in these occasions that the new heroes were known, the moment where the man arrived more close to gods, searching his transcendence. With the time, the religious condition was being supplanted for the spectacle properly said, reaching its peak soon after the beginning of the Roman domain, and almost immediate decline. This work has as objective to make a reflection of the reasons that made the olds rituals to become the great Games, supported mainly in the mythology. We will search to argue the reasons that had taken the Greek people the so great dither front to that it was, perhaps, the most important social manifestation of all the times
