Esta dissertação apresenta o estudo de caso da peça teatral O Rei da Vela, escrita por Oswald de Andrade na década de 1930, sendo encenada pela primeira vez em 1967, pelo grupo Oficina. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi entender por meio de documentos, depoimentos e pesquisa bibliográfica, o que este acontecimento representou para a questão da censura e da liberdade de expressão no Brasil. Para isso, procurou entender através das memórias envolvidas, o contexto de sua encenação, isto é, os anos de 1967 a 1982, principalmente como a data de 1968 foi construída como marco no imaginário sobre o AI-5 e a censura no país. / This thesis presents a case study of the play O Rei da Vela, written by Oswald de Andrade in the 1930s, and first staged in 1967, by the Oficina group. The objective of this research was to understand through documents, depositions and literature, what this event meant to the issue of censorship and freedom of expression in Brazil. For this, we tried to understand through the memories involved, the context of its enactment, ie, the years 1967 to 1982, mainly as the date of 1968 was built as a landmark in the minds of the AI-5 and censorship in the country.
