Insect Sisyphus

McAndrew, Daniel E. January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
We were driving along America’s femoral artery, the Interstate 10. Our excited car bounded ahead at just above the escape velocity required to break away from the massive cluster of Los Angeles and its satellite cities. Tendrils of strip malls and suburbs emanating from these cities branch out toward the empty desert for miles and miles, and we were nearly out of their grasp.

The means and trade transportation in the Republican Peru : The technique history and social history

Tchinga Mikolo, Steeve 09 December 2016 (has links)
After the country independence proclaimed in 1821 and the first decades of political anarchy and instability, Peruvian governing leaders set themselves to building a modern state. Through this process, they aimed at building public facilities, diversifying means of communication and especially in adopting and implementing the new technologies created by the Industrial Revolution (railroads and steam engines) now affordable to exploit the guano deposits. Besides its rich subsoil raw material that underpinned the colonial economy, Peru has a less lenient topography because of its geographical contrasts combining deserts, mountains, and forests. This study suggests doing a historical review of the Republican Peru transportation means by examining the various mechanisms set up by political authorities to connect the country to the world, and by examining the existing situation of the communication networks back in the colonial era. The thesis defines not only the types of trades and transportation developed in different regions of Peru, but also examines the transition from traditional means of transportation (walking, mules, horses, and carriages) and modernity represented by steam engines traction. The interaction issue of these new technologies along with artisanal and traditional peasant economy is raised by comparing several administrative sets or those derived from travelogues.

Society, languages and ideologies in the oasis of Siwa (Egypt) : listening to people's voices / Società, lingue e ideologie nell’oasi di Siwa (Egitto) : il punto di vista dei parlanti / Société, langues et idéologies dans l’oasis de Siwa (Egypte) : le point de vue des locuteurs

Serreli, Valentina 31 March 2016 (has links)
The present thesis proposes a linguistic ethnography of the oasis of Siwa, an Amazigh enclave situated in the Western Egyptian desert. De facto independent for centuries, it is only during the 20th century that this area started undergoing processes of modernization and Arabization with a consequent inclusion in the national (Egyptian) and the international (Amazigh) arenas. Although representing an interesting field for sociolinguistic research, this subject has not attracted scholarly attention so far and this work is a first attempt to fill that gap. This research has a multidisciplinary approach built on sociolinguistic and linguistic anthropological theories. It falls into the field of language attitudes and ideologies’ studies, and it developed a combined method including ethnographic interviewing and participant observation. The thesis presents the dynamics of language use within the oasis from an insider perspective and discusses the mechanisms and the ideologies underlying both speakers’ practices and attitudes, arguing that the emerging differentiation of linguistic practices is related to the attitudinal variation across specific social categories, which adhere to different ideologies. The study portrays a multiform community in a phase of socio-economic transition and sociolinguistic change in progress.

Étude des populations bactériennes des écosystèmes des sols oligotrophes en utilisant des technologies de séquençage à haut débit / Study of bacterial populations from oligotrophic soil ecosystems using high throughput sequencing technologies

Osman Naoum, Jorge 05 August 2016 (has links)
“What microbes are where, and how do they live there” is now an essential question to understand life on Earth, even when comparing seemingly similar ecosystems in different locations. Soil bacterial populations are known to play important roles in biogeochemical cycles, soil maintenance, climatic effects and agriculture. I used pyrosequencing of PCR amplified 16S rDNA from total extracted DNA in order to reveal the bacterial populations living in four different unusual and oligotrophic environments: A. Saline areas are widely distributed on Earth’s and are represented by both saline lakes and saline soils. We examined the bacterial composition of estuary sediments, brackish and sandy soil samples from the Camargue region (Rhône delta in southern France) sampled in two consecutive years. Members belonging to the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria phyla were found principally in saline sediment and soil samples. We found that members from these phyla were associated principally to halophilic bacteria, sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB), nitrate reducing bacteria and coliforms, and that their varying proportions were likely affected by salinity and geographical location. B. Bacterial populations associated with the rhizosphere of plants are known to play essential roles in biogeochemical cycles, plant nutrition and disease biocontrol. We examined the bacterial populations of the rhizosphere of rice (Oryza sativa) growing in the Camargue region in 2013 and 2014. The most abundant bacterial populations were found to be members belonging to the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi and Gemmatimonadetes phyla. The genera members belong these phyla were found to participate in soil biogeochemical processes such as nitrification, denitrification, oxidation, as well as act as biocontrol agents. The bacterial populations were found to significantly vary by geographical location as well by year of collection. C. We examined the surface soils from “Padza de Dapani” on the island of Mayotte off the east coast of Africa, as this region is not a true (hot) desert, but resembles one due to extensive soil erosion. In the acidic, oligotrophic and mineralized soil samples from Mayotte, members of the Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria phyla dominated the bacterial populations. Interestingly, members of the genera Acinetobacter, Arthrobacter, Burkholderia and Bacillus were found to be predominant in our samples, as is also observed in hot (Asian) deserts and may play roles in soil mineral weathering, thus helping to understand desertification processes. D. Earth’s arid regions comprise >30% of the continental surface and the oligotrophic soils are subjected to harsh environmental factors such as low average annual rainfall, high UV exposure and large temperature fluctuations. We examined the bacterial populations present in the rhizosphere of pioneer plants and surface soils in the Jizan desert of Saudi Arabia. The most abundant bacterial phyla belonged to the Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes phyla that were different between the rhizosphere of plant versus these from surface sand, with the exception of the plant “Panicum Turgidum”, which contain in its rhizosphere high proportions (70%) of members belonging to the Flavobacterium genus.

Smaniotto, André Luiz Amorim January 2017 (has links)
The process of thickening and clarifying the effluents of mineral coal processing plants with the use of settlers is a well-established practice throughout the world since it is necessary to reuse the water used for both economic and environmental reasons. The first settler, a thickener type, to enter into industrial operation in the Santa Catarina coal region was installed at the Barro Branco Mine of the Carbonifera Rio Deserto in 2007. The equipment was equipped with PVC lamellae and was installed as an alternative to the decantation basins, which have a high cost of construction and operation. However, the equipment proved to be ineffective due to deposition of solids in the lamellae. This difficulty led to the adoption of other models of vertical flow settlers that do not use lamellae. This work presents the available data of the operation of the equipment with lamellae in the Mina Barro Branco and current results of the operation of the settlers in the Mina Esperança without lamellae. In this second case the flow, concentration of solids and iron, aluminum and manganese metals in the inflow and outflow were measured. In the clarified effluent the pH and turbidity were also measured. Data were recorded for a satisfactory operation, with a significant impact on the reduction of costs in the transportation and deposition of the fine tailings and in the treatment of the clarified overflow, allowing the disposal according to the Environmental Legislation.

Fontana Community Health Assessment

Guevarra, Crystle 01 July 2016 (has links)

Obesity often arises from poor diet and lack of exercise. Food deserts, in particular, cause people to develop poor eating habits because of the limited healthy food options and availability to cheap fast food chains. People affected by food deserts are usually found in communities of color and low-income areas. The purpose of the study was to identify whether Fontana residents are willing to adopt healthier lifestyles based on the perceptions about their own health and the health of the community. Mixed method research was utilized for the study. The participants in the study included adult residents of both sexes and all ethnic backgrounds from the City of Fontana. Those participants ranged in ages from 18 and above. The data results proved some significance between Fontana residents' will to adopt healthier lifestyles and their perceptions on personal and community health. The bivariate correlation tests indicated a statistical significance between the tested variables despite their small correlations and large unshared variances. The ANOVA tests aided with proving the validity of the proposed hypotheses. Based on the data findings, the null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. For future research on getting residents to be more proactive about their health and that of the community, shorter and simpler surveys were advised.

Novel predator recognition by Allenby's gerbil (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi ): do gerbils learn to respond to a snake that can “see” in the dark?

Bleicher, Sonny S., Brown, Joel S., Embar, Keren, Kotler, Burt P. 13 May 2016 (has links)
Unlike desert rodents from North America, Allenby’s gerbil (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi) from the Negev Desert, Israel has evolved with snakes that do not have heat-sensitive sensory pits that enhance night vision. Does this history affect their ability to assess and respond to a snake that has this ability? As a test, we exposed gerbils to risk of predation from various predators, including snakes, owls, and foxes. The snakes included the Saharan horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) and the sidewinder rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes). The former snake lacks sensory pits and shares a common evolutionary history with the gerbil. The latter snake, while convergent evolutionarily on the horned viper, has sensory pits and no prior history with the gerbil. The gerbils exploited depletable resource patches similarly, regardless of snake species and moon phase. While the gerbils did not respond to the novel snake as a greater threat than their familiar horned viper, the gerbils were cognizant that the novel predator was a threat. In response to both snakes, giving-up densities (GUDs; the amount of food left in a resource patch following exploitation) of the gerbils were higher in the bush than open microhabitat. In response to moonlight, GUDs were higher on full than on the new moon. Based on GUDs, the gerbils responded most to the risk of predation from the red fox, least from the two snake species, and intermediate for the barn owl. Keywords:

Středověká ves a její přírodní prostředí. Modelové příklady (8.-15. století). / Medieval village and its natural environment. Model studies (8th-15th century).

Janovský, Martin January 2017 (has links)
This master's thesis deals with the natural environment of two selected deserted medieval localities - Jevany-Dubina (Prague-East District) and Hol (Capital City of Prague). This work consists of two relatively independent parts. The first theoretical part describes chemical processes occurring in forest soils, and anthropogenic impact on soil. The second part is the actual research associated mainly with the study of agricultural land use and the variability of the natural environment influenced by man. The research of the Jevany-Dubina site consisted of an additional geodetic survey, a description of all relics, a surface collection and a geophysical survey. Selected procedures partially helped to interpret the parts of the settlement and its function. We conclude that a farmstead with guardians was most probable. The main part of the thesis is devoted to a geochemical research in the intravilan and extravilan of the deserted medieval village Hol. The greatest attention was paid to the interpretation of phosphorus (P) distribution in soil. Another of the issues dealt with in this thesis was the extent to which residents fertilized their fields and gardens around the village. Higher values of anthropogenic P in soil have been documented only in the intravilan of the village. Farther away from the...
