(I) The System Ferrous Oxide-Phosphoric Acid-Water and some of its Oxidation Products. The existence of the monohydrogen ferrous phosphate Fe(HPO4),H20 (or 2FeO, P2O5, 3H 2O) has "been confirmed. This com-pound was described by Debray but subsequently Erlenmeyer cast doubt on Debray's results. The compound has been obtained in two forms, viz. "amorphous" and crystalline, the latter showing a decidedly lower solubility. In addition a dihydrate Fe(HPO4), 2H2O (or 2FeO, P2O5, 5H2O) has been shown to exist. The dihydrogen phosphate Fe(H2PO4) 2, 2H2O (or FeO, P2O5, 4H2O) described by Erlenmeyer has been confirmed. It is thought that the ferrous phosphates are not complex. By the oxidatiod of phase mixtures poor in acid a red-brown ferric phosphate betaFe 2O3, P2O5, 4H2O is deposited, which is only stable when ferrous iron is present in the liquid phase (at 70°). By completing the oxidation the substance changes both in crystalline form and colour (to pink) to a solid having the same empirical composition. It is thought2that the latter is a complex ferri-phosphate, whilst the former is a true ferric phosphate. (II) An Aeparatus for the Viscosimetric Determination of Transition Points. By means of an apparatus combining the functions of a viscometer and a stirrer the transition points Na2SO4, 10 ↔ OH2O, NiSO4, 7 ↔ 6H2O, and Na2HPO4, 12 ↔ 7H2O have been determined. (III) The System Ferric Oxide-Arsenic Acid-Water at Low Concentrations of Arsenic Acid. The following solid phases have been found to exist between 2·6 and 23·13% of As2O5 in the liquid phase at 25°: Fe2O3, As2O 5, xH2O (where x is probably near 6); Fe 2O3, 2As2O5, 8H2O. The latter compound has not been described before as far as is known. Its existence provides evidence that the ferric arsenates, like the phosphates, are complex. No basic salts were obtained. The system was characterised by an extreme sluggishness in approaching equilibrium.

Linguistic Influence on the Publishing Industry

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT For this study, I chose to look at the influence that linguistics has on the publishing industry, both in writing and editing literary fiction. Both sides of publishing deal with the words and language of a novel, which is what the study of linguistics entails. Throughout this study, I researched the different areas of the publishing industry, academic programs that focus on publishing, and how-to guides on writing literary fiction in order to find out to what extent--if any--linguistics is involved. Also, through editors that I have worked with, and recommendations from various acquaintances, I interviewed two authors--one published and one unpublished--to see if they used any aspects of linguistics in their writing techniques. I found that linguistics was never specifically mentioned in the descriptions of publishing courses, in the how-to guides, nor in the answers from the authors on different writing techniques used; however, linguistics may be used or studied unintentionally. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. English 2011

Application for a PhD by published work

Stanworth, Celia January 1998 (has links)
The body of research presented here represents an important contribution to knowledge in the field of the future of work with particular reference to work facilitated by Information and Communications Technology (ICTs). The work encompasses a number of levels of analysis: the macro level, the organisational level and the workforce level. It has explored previously neglected areas of self-employment, and has contributed to understanding of both corporate and self-employed telework. The submission document is organised as follows: following the list of submitted work the Introduction explores the background to the research area, and then provides a detailed commentary on each piece of submitted work, including clear information on the author's contribution to publications which are co-authored. The Conclusion outlines how the research has added to the existing body of knowledge in the subject fields, and this is followed by a Literature Review which sets the submitted work into the broader context of research on telework and the future of work and employment.

Online journal publishing in Malaysia

Zakaria, Jama'yah January 2009 (has links)
As recently as two decades ago, online journal publishing becomes an integral part of academic activity in educational institutions and research organizations across the globe. In Malaysia, this is a new development and still in its early stage. In the global race to publish research results in online journals, local researchers are reluctant participants. This research looks into the factors that influence the adoption of online journal among Malaysian researchers.

E-transformation in the publishing industry

Daut Mohmud, Dahlina January 2006 (has links)
This thesis presents the findings and conclusions of research that was undertaken with the purpose of understanding the issues and challenges of e-transformation in the publishing industry, particularly the editorial phase, and in a government controlled environment of Malaysia. The research followed an exploratory inquiry and a case study approach, was conducted in a publishing house in Kuala Lumpur. This study was based upon data collected through in depth interview with 18 editors, documentary research (manuals, house styles, General Orders of the Government of Malaysia, forms, correspondence, other in house documents, speeches and local news), physical artefacts (132 edited manuscripts involving 33 editors), archival records (project files spanning 2 years of published works) and literature research. 10 major issues were identified and grouped into 4 categories, 4 major issues from previous failed systems identified, 9 major impacts categorised into 3 different categories were identified and 7 recommendations from the editors were identified for future systems. Focusing on these issues and impacts, several measures were recommended that would improve e-transformation in the company. Guidelines were developed to streamline the transformation and a new workflow proposed towards efficiency in a new medium. Disruption is also identified in the process of transformation. The research concludes by describing the phenomena of transformation in the editorial phase, that there are issues, impacts, disruption and unsettling points before, during and after transformation that would need to be thoroughly investigated, understood and addressed, to successfully transform the editorial phase. The research contributes to both theory and practice. It also proposed a conceptual model to understand the transformation particularly in a public sector; it developed a guideline for effective transformation and developed a workflow for the editorial phase.

Commercial book publishing in Thailand

Karnchanachari, Karnitha January 1990 (has links)
The present study involves the gathering of data and information on book publishing in Thailand and an attempt to systematically develop a data base on the book publishing industry. The research gives emphasis to the private sector which has recently been encouraged by the government to play a leading role in national development. Critical analysis of the findings serves as a basis for recommendations to promote and develop commercial book publishing. Almost all commercial book publishers in Thailand are based in the capital city of Bangkok. Regardless of the seemingly continuing emergence and disappearance of publishing houses, the number of publishers have been steadily increasing through the years. The newly established enterprises tend to be non-family business and could successfully compete in the market, gradually catching up with the older establishments. Most publishers are faced with problems relating to manuscripts, either quantitatively or qualitatively or both. The current general business practice is informal having no written agreement between publisher and author. It is an exception rather than a rule that books are edited by professional editors. Distribution remains a major issue in the development of the publishing industry. Consequently, publishers tend to carry out their own distribution as soon as it becomes economically feasible. It is noted that Thai women are active in book publishing with the average rate of female employment among the majority of publishers under study being slightly more than half of the total employment. Statistics on book production during the past two decades show an overall increase of more than 600 percent. Commercial publishers play an important role in the book publishing industry with commercial book production accounting for half or more of the total number of titles published, gradually increasing from slightly over 50 percent in 1981 to over 70 percent in 1986. The annual trade value is over 3,000 million bahts (US$ 124 million), with no less than 20,000 titles in circulation. The survey indicates average spending on books is less than 1 percent of earning. There appears to be a significant correlation between the GNP per capita and book production. The study reveals that in 1986 there was one book for every 2 to 3 people compared to one book for every 4 to 5 in 1977. The publishing industry has been serving mainly the local market and, as such, is significantly affected by government policy and planning. The National Library of Thailand and the Book Development Centre are the two major national organizations promoting book development in addition to the relevant professional associations. In anticipation of increasing potential market for commercial book, certain major recommendations are proposed to further develop the book publishing industry. These include: 1) Strengthening of the national machinery and professional organizations. 2) Systematic collection and publication of national statistics on book production. 3) Promotion of professional editorial in book publishing.
