Mechanistic evaluation of red algal extracts that slow aging

Aging results from an accumulation of damage to macromolecules inhibiting cellular replication, repair, and other necessary functions. Damage may be due to environmental stressors such as metal toxicity, oxidative stress caused by imperfections in electron transfer reactions, or other metabolic processes. In an effort to discover medical treatments that counteract this damage, we have initiated a program to search for small molecule drugs from natural sources. We have identified marine red algae as a source of natural products that slow aging of the invertebrate rotifer Brachionus manjavacas. Rotifers are a promising model organism for life extension studies as they maintain a short, measurable lifespan while also having an accepted literature precedent related to aging. Rotifer lifespan was increased 9-14% by exposure to three of 200 screened red algal extracts. Bioassay guided fractionation led to semi-purified extracts composed primarily of lipids responsible for rotifer life extension. The life extending effects of these small molecule mixtures are not a result of their antioxidant capacity; instead they may activate pathways that slow the accumulation of cellular damage. An understanding of how these natural products interact with their molecular targets could lead to selective and efficient treatments for slowing aging and reducing age related diseases.

The effects of parasites and food on red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus)

The interaction between the parasite Trichostrongylus tenuis and food quality was investigated in red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus, to determine the cause of variation in population cycles between different areas (Scotland and England). Analysis of long-term data, field experiments and population modelling were carried out. Food quality, in terms of nutrient content of heather, was lower on Scottish grouse moors than on English moors. Parasite burdens were also lower in Scottish grouse populations, than in English grouse populations. A three-way interaction, between food, parasites and area (ScotlandlEngland), acting on breeding production, could explain the variation in population cycle period between areas. However, body condition of grouse was not affected by a food-parasite interaction. Experimental manipulation of food quality and parasite burden did not influence the breeding production of female grouse. Modelling the effects of a food-parasite interaction on grouse populations provided evidence that such an interaction could explain variation in cycle period between areas, although other factors are likely to be important in some cases. Red grouse are not unique, as other species also have cycles driven by food and parasites. Other species do not show cyclic population fluctuations because of having shared parasites, and a strong immune response. There is a specialist predator-prey relationship between red grouse and T. tenuis.

An analysis of luminosity classification of red stars using 2MASS photometric data to create an unbiased sample of red dwarf stars

Study determined if 2MASS photometric data are reliable for luminosity classification using JHK plots of Reid and Hawley (2001). Effects of interstellar reddening on the placement of giant and dwarf data on the JIIK plot were analyzed. Dwarfs (N=54) were selected from Hipparchos and the 2MASS data reduced to an H-K range of 0.14-0.40. A disk dwarf region was identified using linear regression on the low space velocity stars. Giants selected from Volume 5 of the Michigan Catalogue of HD stars and SAG stars classified at Ball State University. They yielded 304 individual giants and 13 matches in the 0.14-0.40 H-K range respectively. The 2MASS data was reliable for luminosity classification of the SAGBSU giants. The classification of the Michigan giants was not possible due to interstellar reddening and the likely presence of faint giant companions. / Department of Physics and Astronomy

Volume-limited samples indicate that red dwarfs are the most abundant stars in the Milky Way and account for most of its mass, despite their low individual masses. However, because of their low luminosity, they are extremely underdetected in magnitude-limited surveys. Complicating the task of identification is the fact that they have the same temperature as red giants and thus are in the same spectral class. We must therefore look for certain spectral features to differentiate between dwarfs and giants. Intermediate-to-broad-band photometry is one method that allows us to perform this task quantitatively. The 2MASS point source catalog contains data for -0.5 billion objects, including photometry in three broadband infrared filters. This paper discusses the manner in which these data can be analyzed to find red dwarfs and the success rate of such analysis. / Department of Physics and Astronomy
