Watching for Wolves: Perspectives on Policing Among Experienced Officers in Atlanta

Odum, William G B 03 May 2017 (has links)
The relationship between the police and the public is largely mediated through policing practice and procedure. The perspective of the officer on the individual level, as well as that of the cumulative police force of a community, frames these practices, ultimately influencing the types of interactions that play out between officers and civilians. This paper looks at the ways in which police officers perceive their communities, their jobs, and themselves in the larger practice of policing. Based on ethnographic research on police in the Atlanta area, this work focuses on the perspective of police officers, and how they are affected by training and their experiences in law enforcement. This study suggests that an ontological shift, which is experienced through training and working as a police officer, contributes to a conceptual division between the police and the public for officers, affecting larger public relations.

A study of self-esteem of Black males in inner city housing in Metro Atlanta

Ohuoba, Christian C. 01 May 1993 (has links)
The overall objective of this study was to identify the common characteristics that are present in the development of self—esteem among black males and to better understand the factors associated with their self-esteem. To attend to this objective the following variables were considered: self-esteem, family structure, peer group association, and personal areas of their lives. Consequently the following hypotheses were tested: 1.There is no statistical significant difference between children who live in public housing and children in non-public housing with reference to their self-esteem. 2. There is no statistical significant difference between children in non-public housing with reference to their peer group relationship. 3. There is no statistical significant difference between children who live in public housing and children in non-public housing with reference to their family support. The results of the t-Test analysis indicated that there is no statistical significant difference between the children living in public housing and the children living in non-public housing for all the three hypotheses tested. Contrary to the previous findings which indicated low self-esteem among Black males in public housing, the result of this study indicated higher levels of self-esteem among Black males living in public housing. The reason for this may be attributed to the interventive program sponsored by Clark Atlanta School of Social Work which provides innovative exercises, workshops, group discussions, games, and fields trips to the Black males that participates in this study.

Race, Class, and Gentrification Along the Atlanta BeltLine

Camrud, Natalie 01 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines issues of affordability and gentrification in neighborhoods around the Atlanta BeltLine. The BeltLine is a Transit Oriented Development project that is an adaptive reuse of an old freight rail corridor circling the city of Atlanta. The rapid new development occurring along the BeltLine is gentrifying neighborhoods and displacing communities. This thesis examines past urban redevelopment projects in Atlanta to see what the affects were on marginalized communities, and how the BeltLine is either similar or different to past development initiatives.

Fear of crime on private urban Historically Black College and University campuses: a survey of the Atlanta University Center students

Onyeozili, Emmanuel C. 01 July 1993 (has links)
The fear of crime is analyzed on six college and university campuses that make up the Atlanta University Center (AUC). The study utilizes interview questionnaire data on 325 students attending AUC institutions which were collected during the spring semester of 1993. The analytical procedures used include the reliability analysis, frequency distributions, cross tabulations and chi-square tests. The data analysis did not reveal any significant relationships between fear of crime and demographic characteristics except for gender of the students. Also, there was no significant relationship between fear of crime and prior victimization. However, the relationship between fear of crime and constrained behavior was significant. On the whole, it was evident that fear of crime increases the probability of constrained behavior, which in turn reduces victimization.

An analysis of a staff shortage within the bureau of Housing and Physical development in the city of Atlanta

Onyong, Ededet O. 01 May 1979 (has links)
This thesis primarily intends to design a staff model which will facilitate service delivery within the Bureau of Housing and Physical Development in the City of Atlanta. An attempt has been made to show how the staff shortage has badly slowed down the pace of service delivery, and the effect of the inadequate service on the community. The cause of the staff shortage has been identified to stem from the provision in the City amended ordinance of November 3, 1975. The ordinance was enacted through the recommendation of the Finance Committee of the City of Atlanta to amend Article II, Classification Plan, Section 21-42 of the Code of Ordinances. The provision in the ordinance for sixteen staff positions failed to consider in depth the future needs of the City. Since the Bureau is understaffed, a device to augment the shortage had been employed by using borrowed personnel from the public and private sectors. The largest number of borrowed personnel comes from the Atlanta Housing Authority whose services to the Bureau have become a liability rather than an asset. This makes the burden of the staff shortage heavier on the Bureau than ever. The thesis recommends alternative lines of action to solve the problem.

An Analysis of Methods of Promoting Country Music Records in the Atlanta, Georgia Area

Fogel, Betty Cruikshank 05 1900 (has links)
This study examined promoting recorded country music from Atlanta, Georgia, and explored why Atlanta is important in this field. It was learned, through interviews, that promoters wanted radio airplay and top trade publication chart ratings. Radio station program directors decided upon playlists from reading trade publications, efforts by record promoters, listener requests and focus groups, and from reported sales. Stores used album and poster displays, charts, and played music for promotion. The business is one of personalities and experience, as much as product promoted. Large conglomerates are fast changing it.
