Predictability of Geomagnetically Induced Currents using neural networks

It is a well documented fact that Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC’s) poses a significant threat to ground-based electric conductor networks like oil pipelines, railways and powerline networks. A study is undertaken to determine the feasibility of using artificial neural network models to predict GIC occurrence in the Southern African power grid. The magnitude of an induced current at a specific location on the Earth’s surface is directly related to the temporal derivative of the geomagnetic field (specifically its horizontal components) at that point. Hence, the focus of the problem is on the prediction of the temporal variations in the horizontal geomagnetic field (@Bx/@t and @By/@t). Artificial neural networks are used to predict @Bx/@t and @By/@t measured at Hermanus, South Africa (34.27◦ S, 19.12◦ E) with a 30 minute prediction lead time. As input parameters to the neural networks, insitu solar wind measurements made by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite are used. The results presented here compare well with similar models developed at high-latitude locations (e.g. Sweden, Finland, Canada) where extensive GIC research has been undertaken. It is concluded that it would indeed be feasible to use a neural network model to predict GIC occurrence in the Southern African power grid, provided that GIC measurements, powerline configuration and network parameters are made available.

The South Atlantic radiation anomaly

Part I. (1) An elementary treatment of the motion of charged particles in a magnetic field is presented. The concept of guiding centre motion is introduced, and is used in outlining the theory of particle drifts. (2 ) The motion of charged particles in the geomagnetic field is discussed, and the concept of adiabatic invariance introduced. (3) Mc Iliwains coordinates for mapping the distribution of charged particles trapped in the geometric field are defined and briefly discussed. (4) A survey of present knowledge of the Van Allen radiation zones is made. Particular attention is given to the distribution, characteristics, and variability of the trapped radiation. (5) The Cape Town magnetic anomaly, the Brazil radiation anomaly and the South Atlantic radiation anomaly are discussed. The electrons entering the South Atlantic radiation anomaly are shown to be those monitored over Iowa by the US satellite Injun I. Part 11. (1) It is shown how the geomagnetic field can, at high altitudes and over relatively short distances, be approximated by the field of a monopole. A new method is developed which enables one to plot the energy absorbed from an electron (which moves in a monopole field in the atmosphere) against altitude, given the initial energy and pitch angle of the electron. Some numerical computations using this method are described, and the results discussed. These results are used, in conjunction with US satellite Injun I for the Iowa region, to estimate the energy inout to the atmosphere in the South Atlantic radiation anomaly. The main approximations and simplifying assumptions made in this treatment, are discussed. (2) Geophysical effects generally recognized to be connected with the precipitation of charged particles are discussed. In the course of this discussion the two main theories of the connection between the radiation zones and the auroras are examined. (3) A preliminary discussion, based on the work summarized in point (1) of detectable geophysical events associated with the precipitation of electrons into the South Atlantic radiation anomaly is given. It is concluded that auroral emission, X-ray bursts, and ionospheric ionization in the E region should be more frequent and pronounced in the South Atlantic radiation anomaly than in any other region of comparable invariant latitudes and that the effects of atmospheric heating by precipitated electrons should be detectable over the anomaly. (4) An assessment is made of the value of the method referred to in point (1). Suggestions for its modification and extension are put forward. It is suggested that if more extensive rocket and satellite data on the low energy component of the electron flux become available, this method can be employed in a rigorous theoretical investigation of the South Atlantic radiation anomaly. Target selection from airborne magnetic and radiometric data in Steinhausen area, Namibia

The eastern branch of the late Proterozoic Damara Orogenic Belt of central Namibia hosts various copper, gold, manganese and uranium deposits, but in the vicinity of Steinhausen, approximately 145 km northeast of Windhoek, the Damara Belt becomes increasingly covered by recent Kalahari cover sediments resulting in little known geology and subsequent lack of discovered economic mineral deposits. Airborne magnetic and radiometric data over the Steinhausen Study Area was enhanced through image processing and filtering to accentuate characteristics of subsurface geology that, by comparing these characteristics to known geology, aided in the interpretive mapping of lithology, structure and targets for follow-up exploration. As a result, some important observations regarding the regional lithology can be drawn. An arenaceous stratigraphic unit that includes a coarse grained, glassy quartzite below the Kuiseb Formation equates to either the eastern Damaran equivalent of the Nosib Group subjected to high grade metamorphism or, alternatively, the upper part of the pre-Damaran sequence, immediately underlying the Damara. The Kuiseb Formation within the study area is uncharacteristically varied as compared to the same formation further west along the Damaran Orogen and can be subdivided into 5 separate units based on geophysical signature. Structural features evident within the study area include the prominent Kudu and Okahandja Lineaments and straddle an area of inferred uplifted stratigraphy of possibly pre-Damara age. The Ekuja Dome (Kibaran age and host to the Omitiomire copper deposit) is also clearly discernible on the airborne magnetic data and is cross-cut by an east-northeast structural zone. Direct targets for follow-up exploration include the Rodenbeck intrusion, anomalous magnetic bodies and numerous radiometric anomalies present within the study area. Identified dome-like features are considered prospective for Omitiomire-style deposits and the Okatjuru Layered Complex is considered a possible source of copper, chromite, magnetite, ilmenite, nickel and the platinum group elements.

Archaeomagnetic field intensity evolution during the last two millennia / Evolução da intensidade do campo arqueomagnético durante os últimos dois milênios

Temporal variations of Earth\'s magnetic field provide a great range of geophysical information about the dynamics at different layers of the Earth. Since it is a planetary field, regional and global aspects can be explored, depending on the timescale of variations. In this thesis, the geomagnetic field variations for the last two millennia were investigated. For that, some improvement on the methods to recover the ancient magnetic field intensity from archeological material were done, new data was acquired and a critical assessment of the global archaeomagnetic database was performed. Two methodological advances are reported, comprising: i) the correction for microwave method of the cooling rate effect, which is associated to the difference between the cooling times during the manufactory of the material and that of the heating steps during the archaeointensity experiment; (ii) a test for thermoremanent anisotropy correction from the arithmetic mean of six orthogonal samples. The temporal variation of the magnetic intensity for South America was investigated from nine new data, three from ruins of the Guaraní Jesuit Missions and six from archaeological sites associated with jerky beef farms, both located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with ages covering the last 400 years. These data combined with the regional archaeointensity database, demonstrates that the influence of significant non-dipole components in South America started at ~1800 CE. Finally, from a reassessment of the global archaeointensity database, a new interpretation was proposed about the geomagnetic axial dipole evolution, where this component falls constantly since ~700 CE associated to the breaking of the symmetry of the advective sources operating in the outer core. / Variações temporais do campo magnético da Terra fornecem uma grande diversidade de informações geofísicas sobre a dinâmica das diferentes camadas da Terra. Por ser um campo planetário, aspectos regionais e globais podem ser explorados, dependendo da escala de tempo das variações. Nesta tese, foram investigadas as variações do campo geomagnético para os dois últimos milênios. Para isso, aprimoramentos nos métodos de aquisição da intensidade geomagnética registrada em materiais arqueológicos foram realizados, bem como a aquisição de novos dados e uma avaliação crítica da base de dados arqueomagnética global. Dois novos avanços metodológicos são aqui propostos, sendo eles: i) correção para o método de micro-ondas do efeito da taxa de resfriamento, que está associada à diferença entre os tempos de resfriamento durante a manufatura do material e o das etapas de aquecimento durante o experimento de arqueointensidade; (ii) teste para correção da anisotropia termorremanente a partir da média aritmética de seis amostras posicionadas ortogonalmente umas às outras durante o experimento de arqueointensidade. Dentre as hipóteses para explicar mecanismos utilizados por pombos-correios para se orientar e navegar no espaço destacam-se a utilização de dois fatores ambientais: gradientes de odores específicos na atmosfera e o campo geomagnético. Para determinar se há diferenças ou correlações entre áreas cerebrais envolvidas com as vias sensoriais olfatória e magnética, utilizou-se imunohistoquímica e gene de resposta imediata ZENK. Dois grupos foram expostos a estímulos olfatórios, mas um com oclusão de narinas. Um grupo foi exposto ao estímulo magnético variando em direção e intensidade semelhante ao campo geomagnético durante o voo, com narinas tampadas. Dois grupos não foram estimulados, mas um teve oclusão de narinas. Dados indicam igual marcação no bulbo olfatório, córtex pré-piriforme e córtex piriforme em animais com as narinas tampadas, expostos ou não ao estímulo magnético. O estímulo olfatório, por outro lado, foi eficaz em marcar estas estruturas. Conclui-se que o processamento central de pistas magnéticas não está intimamente correlacionado à via olfatória. / There are two main theories to explain how homing pigeons orient and navigate in their return flights from unfamiliar sites: by following olfactory cues in the atmosphere or by means of the geomagnetic field. The aim of this study was to determine whether magnetic and olfactory stimuli activate common brain areas in the pigeon, by an immunohistochemical technique using the immediate early gene ZENK. Two groups were exposed to smell, but one had their nostrils plugged. One group was exposed to a magnetic field varying in direction, of intensity similar to the geomagnetic field during flight, with nostrils plugged. Two groups were not stimulated, but one had their nostrils plugged, whereas the other did not. The data indicates that ZENK expression in the olfactory bulb, pre-piriform cortex and piriform cortex was not different in birds with nostrils plugged, whether magnetically stimulated or not. The conclusion is that central processing of magnetic cues is unlikely to be intimately related to the olfactory pathway.

Bulldozer blades and colliding submarine mountain chains : constraints on central Oregon convergent margin tectonics from magnetics and gravity

Magnetic and gravity modelling was completed along two E-W transects offshore central Oregon. These models indicate that the backstop-forming western edge of the Siletz terrane has a seaward dip of approximately 40° to 49° at 44°48'N, shallowing to ~28° at 44°1 1 'N. This is a well-determined result, given available a priori information, to a depth of ~7 km. The edge of the Siletz terrane may continue to descend at these dips to the JdF plate, but alternate geometries for the lowermost portion of the backstop are also consistent with the potential field data. The magnetic data also require progressive eastward demagnetization of the subducting JdF crust, which is most likely due to heating of the descending oceanic plate to the Curie temperature. Our southern transect reveals that Heceta Bank is cored by relatively high-density sediments (~2.54 g/cc), consistent with the model proposed by Kulm and Fowler (1974) for submarine bank formation in the Oregon convergent margin. On the basis of magnetic, gravity, and velocity data, we tentatively interpret a deeply buried, linear aseismic ridge to be present beneath the accretionary complex from about 45°N to 42°N. This ridge may collide with the backstop beneath Heceta Bank and may play a role, in concert with imbricate thrust faulting, in the formation of Heceta Bank's high density core. We also speculate that differences in depth to the JdF plate due to juxtaposition of different-aged crust across pseudofaults which intersect the coast at Nehalem and Heceta Banks may be a factor in the construction of these topographic highs. / Graduation date: 1997
