Penumbra

Brizendine, Elizabeth Katherine 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis consists of a collection of poems. The poems entail a discussion of the weight of human decisions with regards to gender, sexuality, music, religion, and environment. A great deal of these pieces are in conversation with a type of death or an eclipsed ending in order to examine the outcome of each varied individual response to mortality.

Candidats (proto-)amas de galaxies à grand redshift vus par le CFHT / High-redshift galaxy (proto-)cluster candidates as seen by the CFHT

Clarenc, Benjamin 11 September 2018 (has links)
The properties of local galaxies (color, morphology, gas fraction, etc.) greatly depend on their environment. The differentiation occurred during their assembly. Current observations indicate that the peak of star formation occurred around z=2 and that dense environments used to be cradles of intense star formation, unlike today. This differentiation may be explained by observing the high-z progenitors of today’s most massive systems. However, such sources are rare. Good candidates are sub-millimeter galaxies, because they directly trace star formation. A sample of 82 such candidates named SPHerIC (Spitzer–Planck–Herschel infrared clusters) was made from the data of these three satellites. From them, 13 have been observer by the CFHT. I extracted as much information as I could from those new data in order to make SPHerIC more robust. After making JKs source catalogs with a self-made photometric pipeline, I made galaxy surface density maps in J–Ks color slices. I defined 8 colors using Berta et al. (2013) galaxy templates to constrain the redshift of galaxies. I show the coincidence between the position of JKs and IRAC-red overdensities with the position of SPIRE red sources. JKs color–magnitude diagrams (J–Ks vs Ks) along with models from Kodama et al. (1998) may exhibit a z~2 red sequence in 12 out of 13 fields. NIR color–color diagrams ([3.6]–[4.5] vs J–Ks) of IRAC-red sources are compatible with starforming models from Berta et al. (2013), also compatible with Planck and Herschel results. The analyses of our photometric data all converge toward the fact that our candidates are genuine high-z star-forming structures. From spectroscopic observations at the IRAM/30m telescope, I confirm for instance 2 structures at z>2. Infrared luminosities and SFRs derived from CO fluxes are consistent with high-SFR sources. In parallel, I have been involved in the Euclid Consortium. I studied the PSF variations of the VIS imager w.r.t. the spectral type of observed objects and their position on the focal plane. I show there is a limited impact on the PSF as long as the stars and galaxies are standard.

Conceptualizing Location - One term, many meanings, a lot of problems / Conceptualizing Location - One term, many meanings, a lot of problems

Kopanja, Mihajlo January 2018 (has links)
Mihajlo Kopanja Conceptualizing Location - One Term, Many Meanings, a Lot of Problems Master thesis Supervisor: Nuno Morgado, M. Pol. Sc., Ph.D. Abstract Location as a geopolitical concept is one of the most fundamental variables being used in research since the beginning of geopolitics itself. Yet, usages of the concept in geopolitical literature point to different conceptualizations of location which, in turn, provide different explanations of causal properties this concept has on the state's behavior. This logical inconsistency imbedded in the concept of location sets up a fundamental question: what location, as a concept, is and how does it produce causal effect onto a state? Following that another question arises: can this inconsistency be resolved through reconceptualization? By identifying the set of different attributes assigned to the concept of location in existing literature determination of inconsistency has been made and used as a basis for reconceptualization of location. Through the introduction of a model with four secondary concepts using the radial approach to concept formation an attempt has been made to resolve internal inconsistencies of location as a concept and as a variable while increasing its explanatory power in understanding and analyzing its effects on states as shown in the...

Economic Consequences of Select Water-Energy Links : An Investigation of the Potential of Water-Energy Links Used to Improve the Economics and Added-Benefits of the Electrical System on Grand Cayman

McNamee, Lewis January 2020 (has links)
This investigation posits the hypotheses: 1) Renewable energy is a viable economic alternative to current electricity sources on Grand Cayman and 2) focus on the water-energy nexus reveals positive synergies in water and energy economics on Grand Cayman.             These were investigated by examining the water-energy links of wastewater as a resource, and water produced from a hydrogen fuel cell. Conditions were varied including cost and efficiency factors to understand the limits of both links.             The results show that both hypotheses can be confirmed, though not in all circumstances. Longer project lifetimes increase the viability of renewable energy. Short lifetimes favour fossil-fuelled energy. Generally, water-energy linked thinking is economically favourable when the water is considered an additional product. The economic benefit of the hydrogen fuel cell is near-negligible due to low water flow rate. The economic benefit of wastewater as a resource is large, offsetting much of the costs of any project, particularly at long lifetimes. Both links provide societal benefits in the form of increased water availability. This increase is small for the hydrogen fuel cell water link, and large for the wastewater link. The wastewater link is however limited both by availability of wastewater, and acceptance of the direct reuse of treated wastewater.             It was determined that further investigation of these and other links are justified. The economic value of water-energy links is proven over a wide range of variabilities. Renewable energy has also been shown to be economically viable for the island of Grand Cayman.

Seger och förlust i ett oavgjort sjöslag : en teorikonsumerande studie om slaget vid Skagerrak år 1916

Rudengård, Maja January 2020 (has links)
On May 31st 1916, during the First World War, one of the greatest naval battles took place in the North Sea outside of the Danish west coast between the naval forces of Great Britain and Germany. This paper aims to examine the outcome of the Battle of Jutland through three different perspectives on victory and defeat. The battle is well-debated as it has been considered a draw, as both actors saw themselves as victorious states after the battle. This study therefore contributes to the debate by systematically investigate how three different perspectives on victory and defeat can explain the outcome. Through the perspectives end-state understandings, cost-benefit calculus and match-fixing, events during the battle and which contributed to the subsequent discussions about the outcome, will be analyzed. The study results in the finding that one of the three perspectives, match-fixing, can explain victory and defeat in the battle. The result therefore shows that an systematic analyze of the perspectives can explain the outcome of the battle. This is an important contribution to the further research and demonstrates that there are ways to systematically measure an outcome with an explanatory ambition.

The Grand Tour

Hamrin, Kristoffer January 2021 (has links)
In my final architectural thesis I decided to travel through Italy for three months on a so called Grand tour to explore the rich history, culture & architecture. The Grand tour is also about finding my final thesis project by meeting and understanding certain  problems and issues that I encounter during the trip by speaking to locals.  The people we meet throughout the Grand Tour  decided every destination we go to next by signing our map. Where?San Sicario Bobsled CourseTurin, Winter Olympics 2006 The remains of the huge infrastructures and facilities that was built for the winter Olympics in Turin 2006 are left completely abandoned and are sitting as huge scare in the landscapes in the small village San sicario. The remaining structures are left completely without future plans and stand rotting. The Italian government deeming it is even too expensive to demolish. I am going to work to trying to redesign the olympic bobsled park that is located near San sicario. Is it possible to rethink and give the structures a new purpose? I redesigned and integrated a system of geodesic domes with a botanic garden and controlled climateall year around to facilitate a new work environment and living domes, a space where you could travel toand work digitally from.Since that alternative now is available and will remain after the pandemic is over. But also repurposingthe existing structures since they stand empty and still in fair condition.

From Text to Space and Vice Versa : The Travel Accounts of Sir William Gell and Edward Dodwell in Phocis and Boeotia

Avgeris, Zafeirios January 2021 (has links)
This thesis examines and compares two travel accounts in the regions of Phocis and Boeotia in Greece, as they appear in the book of Sir William Gell “The Itinerary of Greece: With a Commentary on Pausanias and Strabo and an Account of the Monuments of Antiquity at Present Existing in that Country (1819) and on the two volumed book of Edward Dodwell A Classical and Topographical Tour Through Greece: During the Years 1801, 1805, and 1806, Volume 1 & 11 (1819). More specifically, the thesis explores the extent of the area that these travelers managed to cover during their routes, the places with historical and archaeological interest that they mentioned at least, their moves among the various chronotopes, and the use of their predecessors’ texts for on their routes. With the use of digital platforms such as Recogito, their travel accounts have been annotated, tagged, aligned with ToposText gazetteer and Wikidata, exported as .csv files, and further processed using OpenRefine. By having as a ground theory approach the social construction of space, as Lefebvre has defined it, the thesis, with the assistance of ArcGIS and Python and the necessary manual steps, explored the topics as mentioned above. The analysis of these topics provided interesting results to the thesis. It showed the differences in the area coverage of the two travelers in Phocis and Boeotia. It also highlighted their accuracy in the discovering of ancient places and buildings. Moreover, it delineated their moves through the different chronotopes and the vital role of the physical environment as a bridge for these moves. Ultimately, this thesis revealed the crucial role of their predecessors’ travel accounts for their navigation on the respecting. Mainly, it made clear the vitality of the travel accounts of Strabo and Pausanias. These results were clearly connected with the social construction of space and time from the two British travelers based on their cultural background.

Umělecký mecenát křižovnického velmistra Františka Matouše Böhmba 1722-1750 / Art mecenat of the Cross Order' s with the Red Star Grandmaster Francis Matthew Böhmb (1722-1750)

Pučalík, Marek January 2013 (has links)
The paper aims on the cultural life of Francis Matthew Böhmb (1722- 1750), a native of Lubenec (Bohemia), Superior General of the Order of Crusaders with the Red Star in Prague. The Grand Master of the Order took the vows under the rule of sophisticated, erudite lawyer Grandmaster Martin Constantine Beinlich and in the second half of the 17th century tread in the steps of the Restorer of the Order, George Ignatius Pospichal. Sophisticated Böhmb became parish priest in Carlsbad firs. It was in 1720 when the General Prior called him to Prague as a Prior and after Beinlich's death was, on the feast of St. Agnes in March 2, 1722, unanimously elected Grand Master. Thesis followed particularly the cultural activities of the forenamed prelate, in the time of the day-to-day duties of the convent ad Pedem Pontis. It was Beinlich, begining to negotiate an extended Order range beyond the borders of the Czech Kingdom, however it was Böhmb's duty to realize this idea when, in 1723, he installed the Knights of the Cross in Bratislava (Pressburg), and ten years after, in Vienna. In Bratislava he let to build a new commendam's hospital there, as in Vienna, where he used the newly erected prestigious church of St. Charles Borromeo. At home he, in the thirties of the 18th century, let the church of St. Mary...

Collective action among female street traders: A case study of a street trader organisation in the City of Cape Town CBD

Xego, Kumbula Koliseka January 2021 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / Street trading is a highly contested activity in South Africa because of the different interests held by the government, other stakeholders and street traders. The contradictory nature of the relationship between government and street traders has led to exclusionary policies and practices put in place by the government to regulate street trading. These exclusionary practices have negative effects on the livelihoods of street traders. Female traders are more vulnerable and at greater risk than their male counterparts. Organised labour movements have largely focused on formal sector workers, leaving the rights of informal workers largely unregulated. In recent years there has been an emergence of informal sector organisations seeking to protect the interests of street traders and influence informal trading policy. Although seldom researched, a number of informal sector organisations have emerged in South African cities. / 2023
