Essays on Economic and Environmental Analysis of Taiwanese Bioenergy Production on Set-Aside Land

Domestic production of bioenergy by utilizing set-aside land in Taiwan can reduce Taiwan’s reliance on expensive and politically insecure foreign fossil fuels while also reducing the combustion of fossil fuels, which emit substantial amounts of greenhouse gases. After joining the World Trade Organization, Taiwan’s agricultural sector idled about one-third of the national cropland, hereafter called “set-aside land”. This potentially provides the land base for Taiwan to develop a bioenergy industry. This dissertation examines Taiwan’s potential for bioenergy production using feedstocks grown on set-aside land and discusses the consequent effects on Taiwan’s energy security plus benefits and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Taiwan Agricultural Sector Model (TASM) was used to simulate different agricultural policies related to bioenergy production. To do this simulation the TASM model was extended to include additional bioenergy production possibilities and GHG accounting. We find that Taiwan’s bioenergy production portfolio depends on prices of ethanol, electricity and GHG. When GHG prices go up, ethanol production decreases and electricity production increases because of the relatively stronger GHG offset power of biopower. Results from this pyrolysis study are then incorporated into the TASM model. Biochar from pyrolysis can be used in two ways: burn it or use it as a soil amendment. Considering both of these different uses of biochar, we examine bioenergy production and GHG offset to see to what extent Taiwan gets energy security benefits from the pyrolysis technology and how it contributes to climate change mitigation. Furthermore, by examining ethanol, electricity and pyrolysis together in the same framework, we are able to see how they affect each other under different GHG prices, coal prices and ethanol prices. Results show that ethanol is driven out by pyrolysis-based electricity when GHG price is high. We also find that when biochar is hauled back to the rice fields, GHG emission reduction is higher than that when biochar is burned for electricity; however, national electricity production is consequently higher when biochar is burned.

Abstract This study analyzed Taiwan film industry with Michael Porter¡¦s ¡§Diamond¡¨ system, and also tried to drive a dynamic diamond system to scenario plan for the future of Taiwan film industry. There are four attributes in a diamond system. They are: Factor Conditions, Demand Conditions, Related and Supporting industries, and Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry. The conclusions of the analysis are as follows: 1. Factor Conditions Film industry knowledge, finance support and high quality human resource are significant in filmmaking. 2. Demand Conditions Because of the small home market and low market share, film production companies in Taiwan should actively search for strategic alliances and co-production chances. It would broaden market scale in this way. 3. Related and Supporting industries In order to leverage resource into film production, Related and Supporting industries need to group clusters. 4. Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry Focusing the competition among national firms is more important than facing the competition with international big companies. The conclusion of the scenario planning suggests that developing digital content industry and attracting high quality human resource would drive the Taiwan film industry diamond run.

The research on the factors which affect the interaction types between Taiwan and China subsidiaries of MNC

China changed its communistic economy policy to the open one during these 20 years. China¡¦s cheap labor force, plentiful natural resources and vast market have attracted lots of MNC to settle subsidiaries/manufacturing plants there. But the unique political and economical system of China and the special culture of Guan-Xi had made many MNC fail in the entrance of China market. Therefore, many MNC rely on the knowledge and competence of Taiwan subsidiaries. This research deals with the extent to which factors would affect the interactions, especially the complementary relationship, between Taiwan and China subsidiaries. Regarding the characteristics of industry in which MNC are, the following factors increase the extent of complementary relationship between Taiwan and China subsidiaries: 1.The higher speed of technology replacing in the industry; 2.The more support by China government; 3. Their affiliated industries are highly globalized. Regarding the business models of MNC, the more consistency of which their customers¡¦ need have, the higher degree of complementary relationship between Taiwan and China subsidiaries are. Regarding specific of parent companies and subsidiaries, the following factors increase the extent of complementary relationship between Taiwan and China subsidiaries: 1.Subsidiaries rely more on HQ to get core resourses; 2.The more activities which Taiwan and China subsidiaries have in common.

This thesis tries to argue the important influence of culture and identity in national security studies, especially about Taiwan¡¦s security. In my viewpoint, culture and identity have become two powerful elements in security studies. In the Post-Cold War era, material factors are no longer the only base of national security. At the same time, the culture clash has become another potential factor that influences the national and international security. The 911 event offers the best example. Meanwhile, the Taiwan security environment is undergoing a great change. The military competition tendency between Taiwan and Mainland China becomes more and more dangerous. It seems that the elements of culture and norms haven¡¦t been taken into consider by Taiwan authorities upon how these elements could affect Taiwan¡¦s security. In this thesis, the viewpoint of constructivism on international relations theory has been chosen to survey how culture and identity factors influence Taiwan¡¦s security, and I try to figure out the influence of culture and identity in security research of international relations. Three main points of conclusion could be made: 1. Culture and identity have become important factors of national security. At the same time, the scholars of mainstream international theory (like neo-realism and neo-liberalism) have paid more attention to culture and identity research. 2. It is very important to combine cultural and material factors in national security research. An effective cultural strategy could improve the function of national security policy. 3. Taiwan administration has to think over the culture and identity factors¡¦influences upon Taiwan security. Although theses factors don¡¦t construct an immediate and clear threat, but in the future, theses factors may become a dangerous threat of national security. In the long run, they could even destroy the political power.

Analysis of temporal and spatial variations of Taiwan Strait water

The water masses in the Taiwan Strait (TS) contain the Kuroshio Branch Water (KBW), the South China Sea Surface Water (SCSSW), and the China Coastal Water (CCW). The seasonality of their temporal and spatial variations is modified by the East Asia monsoon and the bottom topography. Hydrographic data acquired during 1985-2003 were studied using a cluster analysis for the classification of the water masses. In addition to the three water masses identified previously, the cluster analysis further classified the Subsurface Water (SBW) under 100 m depth in the Penghu Channel (PHC) and the Coastal Water (CW) along the China coast in summer. Results derived from the cluster analysis together with the T-S diagram suggest that the KBW and SBW dominates in the PHC, whereas CCW occupies in the north TS from January to April. After May, the SCSSW replaces the KBW in the TS through PHC. Meanwhile, the CW distributes along the northwest bank of the TS. After the onset of northeast monsoon in October, the CCW intrudes southward to the northern TS, yet the KBW is confined in the PHC. A zonal oceanic front is clearly seen between the two water masses over the Chang-Yuen Rise in winter. As for the NTMW, it presents below 30 m depth during May and September, and would distribute in depths 0-100 m in other months. The monthly hydrographic databank established in this study has a horizontal grid resolution of 10'x10'. The vertical levels are set at depths 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 125, 150, and 200 m. The study also concludes that there is hardly a northward flow in the TS in winter connecting the South China Sea Warm Current to the so-called Taiwan Warm Current.

This study preliminarily introduced the concept of ¡§cultural creative industry¡¨ and chose ¡§publishing industry¡¨ ¡Vwhich has been neglected in the industry study in the long run-as the main subject in this study. This study analyzed the developing trend and strategy of Taiwan¡¦s publishing industry from Porter¡¦s ¡§diamond model¡¨ which focused on the four important factors- demand conditions, factor conditions, related and supporting industries and firm¡¦s strategy, structure and rivalry. Furthermore, the study mainly adopted literature research and second-hand information analysis as the principal methodology along with in-depth interviews with highly-involved professionals which included ¡§City Group¡¨ the most successful publishing group among HK, China and Taiwan, ¡§Linking Books¡¨ which has achieved in running business in China and ¡§Taipei publishing industry associate¡¨ which owns the main members located in Taipei in publishing sector. Because the market scale is limited and the publishing industry neglected the oversee market for a long time, we could find that our publishing industry is mainly composed of medium-and-small enterprises. Under the saturated domestic publishing market and increasingly highly competitive environment, our publishing industry is in an urgent and difficult time to face the challenge of globalization. Taiwan¡¦s publishing industry should take ¡§great china market¡¨ -China, HK and Taiwan- as the first priority and then enter into the ¡§pan-china market¡¨ which focuses on the Singapore and Malaysia. In the end, we could get the chance to get into western stage. For our industry, we should take the ¡§Big conglomerate, vice-bands¡¨ model which is imitated from the global strategy of western publishing group. By that, our industry could enhance negotiating power, share the complementary resource in the group, share the managerial and marketing platform. This study hopes to be a lead to attract more researchers. Facing the global movement of industry structure, we underwent the hollowing out of the industry especially in the manufacturing field, we have to think should Taiwan has the alternative to create the next economic miracle. Abstract According to Standard & Poor, the market of the global medical devices of orthopedics in 2002 is $13 billion , the U.S.A market accounts for the always selling of 60%, about $7,6 billion, there is 13% to 16% increasing in every year, it is estimated that will growing up over twice within ten years , Currently, Taiwan market of the artificial joint products which mainly come from importing in foreign countries, such as Zimmer , J&J DePuy , Stryker,Wright , Smith&Nephew and British¡¦s company of Biomet ,etc. And Taiwanese medical device of orthopedics companies shares less 1% of global orthopedics market. In general speaking, besides U.S.A market, the market of Mainland China can be expected to grow up 20-30% in every year; the annual increasing in Japan and South Korea. are about 10-15%; Taiwan market also annual grow up 4-6% . The rest of Asian countries of healthcare insurance systems do not build up well so far. These countries will strong and increasing the national income and aging population in future, it is expected that the market scale will be expanded day by day. Case study found the orthopedics apparatus industry of development is influenced by government medical devices regulation and reimbursement system. Due to the loss of medical expenditure and reimbursement system reform that threaten to influence the development of transnational medical devices of orthopedics directly, relatively but the opportunity to medical device of orthopedics of native country of Taiwan enterprises. The manufacturer of Taiwan is one of the international division system, have ability to manufacture and development. Taiwan becomes the center of research and development, stand firm in the most key position in the value chain of production. Then could keep the advantage manufacture in abroad and maintain it with international factory's strategic partner's relationship.
