Better Admission Control and Disk Scheduling for Multimedia ApplicationsVenkatachari, Badrinath 01 May 2002 (has links)
General purpose operating systems have been designed to provide fast, loss-free disk service to all applications. However, multimedia applications are capable of tolerating some data loss, but are very sensitive to variation in disk service timing. Present research efforts to handle multimedia applications assume pessimistic disk behaviour when deciding to admit new multimedia connections so as not to violate the real-time application constraints. However, since multimedia applications are ``soft' real-time applications that can tolerate some loss, we propose an optimistic scheme for admission control which uses average case values for disk access. Typically, disk scheduling mechanisms for multimedia applications reduce disk access times by only trying to minimize movement to subsequent blocks after sequencing based on Earliest Deadline First. We propose to implement a disk scheduling algorithm that uses knowledge of the media stored and permissible loss and jitter for each client, in addition to the physical parameters used by the other scheduling algorithms. We will evaluate our approach by implementing our admission control policy and disk scheduling algorithm in Linux and measuring the quality of various multimedia streams. If successful, the contributions of this thesis are the development of new admission control and flexible disk scheduling algorithm for improved multimedia quality of service.

Development of a Self-Consistent Gas Accretion Model for Simulating Gas Giant Formation in Protoplanetary DisksRussell, John L. 22 December 2011 (has links)
The number of extrasolar planet discoveries has increased dramatically over the last 15 years. Nearly 700 exoplanets have currently been observed through a variety of observation techniques. Most of the currently documented exoplanets differ greatly from the planets in our own Solar System, with various combinations of eccentric orbits, short orbital periods, and masses many times that of Jupiter. More recently, planets belonging to a new class of `distant gas giants' have also been discovered with orbits of 30 to 100 times that of Jupiter. The wide variety of different planet formation outcomes stem from a complex interplay between gravitational interactions, hydrodynamic interactions and competitive accretion among the planets that is not yet fully understood.
Simulations performed using a series of modifications to an existing, widely used hydrodynamic code (FARGO) are presented. The main goal is to develop a more rigorous and robust gas accretion scheme that is valid and consistent for the ranges of exolanetary gas giant masses, eccentricities and semimajor axes that have been observed to better understand the mechanisms involved in their formation. The resulting scheme is a more robust and accurate prescription for gas accretion onto planetary cores in a manner that is mostly resolution independent and valid over a large range of masses (less than an Earth mass to multiple Jupiter masses). The modified scheme accounts for multiple, competing, dynamic accretion mechanisms (including atmospheric effects) and their associated time scales between an arbitrary number of protoplanets. This updated accretion scheme provides a means for exploring the entire formation process of gas giants out of a variety of initial conditions in a self-consistent manner. The modifications made to the code as well as simulation results will be discussed and explored.

Segmentace optického disku ve snímcích sítníce / Optic disc segmentation in retinal imagesVymazal, Bronislav January 2013 (has links)
Cílem této práce bylo vytvořit kompaktní algoritmus sloužící k lokalizaci, segmentaci a sledování optického disku v sekvencích obrazů sítnice. Pro účely lokalizace byla použita nová metoda založena na „fast radial transform“. Segmentace optického disku je založena na klasické metodě Chan-Vese, která byla rozšířena o další prvky a implementována v lokalizované podobě, která umožňuje lépe segmentovat obrazy s vysokou mírou nehomogenity. Pro sledování optického disku v sekvencích obrazů byl využit optický tok založený na Lucas-Kanade algoritmu. Všechny metody byly vyhodnoceny na dvou databázích obrazů s odlišnými charakteristikami. První databází je klasická databáze s vysokým rozlišením. Druhou je pak databáze s nízkým rozlišením a vysokou mírou šumu. Všechny výsledky jsou pak porovnány s referenčními hodnotami a vyhodnoceny.

Deformačně-napěťová analýza páteřního segmentu / Strain-stress analysis of spinal segmentPánis, Vladimír January 2009 (has links)
Presented work deals with the strain-stress analysis of a spinal segment while monitoring the influence of total disk replacement Maverick on the global behaviour of the spinal segment. It also assesses the influence of this implant on the nearest upper intervertebral disk. On the basis of CT images was in the program Rhinoceros created the geometry model of spinal segment Th12-L2. The geometry model of implant was applied between vertebra L1 and L2 instead of intervertebral disk from which the whole core was removed, while in the immediate surrounding of implant the part of disk was left, which is important from the view of stability. Subsequently were in the program Ansys Workbench created finite element models for two states: - healthy (unbroken) status - status with applied implant Then the calculations for movements were realized: lateral flexion, flexion, extension, rotation. For the same movements were realized calculations of the model simulated spinal fusion of the vertebras L1-L2. Finally an influence both of methods (total disk replacement, spinal fusion) on the intervertebral disk Th12-L1 was compared.

Propulsion modelling of a generic submarine propellerBoman, Gustav January 2023 (has links)
Self propulsion modelling is important in order to accurately simulate ships and submarinesusing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). However, fully resolved simulations of hull andpropeller geometries are computationally heavy and time consuming. As such there is a greatinterest in lower order CFD models of propellers. This work investigates three lower ordermodels of a non-cavitating generic submarine propeller (INSEAN E1619) in OpenFOAM. Themodels investigated are Actuator Disk (AD). Rotor Disk (RD) and Actuator Line Model (ALM).The AD model applies a momentum change based on propeller performance coefficients overa disc cell set. The RD uses Blade Element Method (BEM) to calculate a more realistic thrustdistribution over the disk. Finally the ALM applies BEM over seven rotating lines within the cellset disc. The source code to the RD model was modified according to suggestions provided fromearlier studies on the model. The ALM used was originally designed for turbines which wasrectified by changing the force projection vectors in the source code to model propellers instead.There was not enough published data to directly utilize BEM on the E1619 propeller, thus thedata was generated by conducting 2D simulations on every element. The simulations were setup to replicate results provided in earlier works with higher order models in order to compareboth quantitative and qualitative results. It was found the ALM matched the reference databest out of the models tested in this work. The RD was qualitatively similar to the time averageof the ALM fields but numerically inaccurate. The AD results were poor, both quantitativelyand qualitatively.

Study of the oxygen reduction reaction on platinum with scanning electrochemical microscopy and rotating disk voltammetrySun, Xiaojing 15 December 2007 (has links)
The tip generation/substrate collection mode (TG/SC) of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was used to study the ORR reactivity on Pt catalysts in sulfuric acid solution. The SECM reactivity image and the photographic image of different single crystalline regions of the etched Pt electrode correlated well. The electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) image of Pt confirmed the surface single crystalline orientation. The image resolution is improved by employing smaller tip-substrate distance. The kinetics of the ORR on Pt surface was also studied at -15 - 30 C by means of the rotating disk voltammetry techniques. The calculated Tafel slopes for 0.1 m and 0.9 m HClO4 changed with decreasing temperature, indicating lower kinetics at low temperature. Peroxide is produced at potentials below 0 V vs SCE.

Towards label-free biosensing in compact disk technologies f or point-of-need analysisAvellà Oliver, José Miguel 01 September 2017 (has links)
Tesis por compendio / This thesis explores new analytical advances using compact disk biosensing technologies, and comprises six scientific publications distributed along four chapters. Special attention is herein payed to Thermochromic Etching Disks (TED) technology (Chapter 1), rational design of disk-based biorecognition assays (Chapter 2), and label-free detection systems for point-of-need analysis (Chapters 3 and 4).
First, insights into a novel light-mediated signal developing system for biorecognition assays (based on TED disks and drives) are provided together with an overview of the state-of-the art and future trends in photo- and thermochromic biosensing. This signal developing approach exploits photo- and thermochromism for biosensing in an original manner and represents a potential strategy to simplify signaling processes in bioanalytical systems. Then, how to transform TED technology into lab-on-a-disk systems is addressed. TED has proven to be a very versatile tool to perform sensitive analysis of biorecognition assays, using platforms and scanners easily obtained from regular disks and drives, respectively. Biologically relevant assays of different nature (microarray, cell culture, immunofiltration, turbidimetry, etc.) have been arrayed in a single disk and sensitively analyzed by imaging.
Regarding rational design, a theoretical-experimental method (INSEL) based on kinetics and mass-transport modelling for optimizing biorecognition assays and exploring their behavior is presented. INSEL has been implemented as an in silico tool that enables to characterize biointeractions with minimal experimentation, to perform optimizations directed towards custom objectives defined by the user, and to easily compute the effect of critical variables without further experiments.
In another study included in this thesis, polycarbonate grooved structures obtained from standard recordable disks (CD-R and DVD-R) were coated with silver and tailored to become SERS-active. This strategy represents a cost-effective and industrially scalable alternative to the SERS substrates typically used for bioanalysis. These disk-based materials have presented tunable plasmonic responses, significant Raman enhancement, and have allowed complex biological targets (such as proteins and exosomes) to be analyzed by SERS without using labeled reagents as tracers. In addition to introduce inexpensive and large-scale SERS substrates for biosensing, this study also suggests the development of prospective Raman scanners based on disk drives.
Another approach herein presented addresses the implementation of diffraction-based sensing (DBS) in TED technology in order to conceive disk-based label-free biosensors based on standard disks and drives. At first, a comprehensive experimental assessment of the analytical possibilities offered by DBS is presented. Then, the fabrication of arrays of diffractive protein networks on TED disks is investigated, with which sensitive analysis of antibodies in label-free conditions has been demonstrated, using adapted drives as scanners. This investigation provides important insights into cost-effective and industrially scalable functional materials and detection setups that exploit consumer electronics for label-free biosensing. / Esta tesis explora nuevos avances en química analítica usando tecnologías de biosensado basadas en sistemas de disco compacto y comprende seis publicaciones científicas distribuidas a lo largo de cuatro capítulos. Los estudios se han centrado en la tecnología Thermochromic Etching Disks (TED) (Capítulo 1), el diseño racional de ensayos de bioreconocimiento en discos compactos (Capítulo 2), y la detección sin marcaje para realizar análisis in situ (Capítulos 3 y 4).
Primero, enmarcado en una discusión del estado del arte y futuras tendencias en biosensado foto y termocrómico, se presenta un nuevo sistema (basado en discos y lectores TED) mediado por luz para el desarrollo de señales en ensayos de bioreconocimiento. Ésta constituye una estrategia novedosa para aprovechar el foto y termocromismo en biosensado, y presenta un gran potencial para simplificar los procesos de desarrollo de señal en sistemas bioanalíticos. A continuación, se aborda cómo transformar la tecnología TED en sistemas analíticos integrados basados en discos compactos. TED ha demostrado ser una herramienta muy versátil para analizar, de forma sensible, ensayos de bioreconocimiento usando plataformas y escáneres fácilmente obtenidos a partir de discos y lectores convencionales, respectivamente. Un único disco ha mostrado poder albergar varios ensayos biológicos importantes y de distinta naturaleza (micromatriz, cultivos celulares, inmunofiltración, turbidimetría, etc.), para ser analizados de forma sensible a través de imágenes
En cuanto al diseño racional, se presenta un método teórico-experimental (INSEL), basado en modelos cinéticos y de transporte de masa, para optimizar ensayos de bioreconocimiento y explorar su comportamiento. INSEL se ha implementado como una herramienta in silico que permite caracterizar biointeracciones mediante mínima experimentación, realizar optimizaciones dirigidas a objetivos particulares definidos por el usuario, y computar el efecto de variables críticas de forma sencilla y sin experimentos adicionales.
En otro estudio incluido en esta tesis, nanoestructuras en forma de surco obtenidas a partir de discos regrabables convencionales (CD-R y DVD-R) fueron recubiertas con plata y adaptadas para ser activas en SERS. Esta estrategia supone una alternativa, económicamente efectiva e industrialmente escalable, a los sustratos SERS típicamente usados en bioanálisis. Estos materiales han mostrado respuestas plasmónicas sintonizables, una amplificación Raman significativa, y han permitido analizar muestras biológicas complejas (como proteínas y exosomas) mediante SERS sin usar marcadores. Además de introducir sustratos SERS grandes y baratos, este trabajo también sugiere el desarrollo de escáneres Raman basados en lectores de disco.
Otra aproximación presentada en esta tesis aborda la implementación de DBS (diffraction-based sensing) en tecnologías TED, con el fin de desarrollar biosensores para detección sin marcaje basados en discos y lectores convencionales. Primero, se presenta una amplia evaluación experimental de las posibilidades analíticas ofrecidas por DBS. A continuación, se investiga la fabricación de multitud de redes difractivas de proteínas sobre discos TED, con las que se ha demostrado la determinación sensible y sin marcaje de anticuerpos, usando lectores adaptados como escáneres analíticos. Esta investigación introduce avances importantes que apuntan al desarrollo de materiales funcionales y sistemas de detección, baratos e industrialmente escalables, que aprovechen las tecnologías de consumo para realizar biosensado sin marcaje. / Aquesta tesi explora nous avanços en la química analítica usant tecnologies de biosensat basades en sistemes de disc compacte, i comprèn sis publicacions científiques distribuïdes en quatre capítols. Aquesta estratègia suposa una alternativa, econòmicament efectiva i industrialment escalable, als substrats SERS típicament usats en bioanàlisi. Aquests materials han mostrat respostes plasmòniques sintonitzables, una amplificació Raman significativa, i han permès analitzar mostres biològiques complexes (com proteïnes i exosomes) mitjançant SERS sense usar marcadors. A més d'introduir substrats SERS grans i barats, aquest treball també suggereix el desenvolupament d'escàners Raman basats en lectors de disc.
Una altra aproximació presentada en aquesta tesi aborda la implementació de DBS (diffraction-based sensing) en tecnologies TED, per tal de desenvolupar biosensors basats en discos i lectors convencionals que permeten detecció sense marcatge. Primer, es presenta una amplia avaluació experimental de les possibilitats analítiques que ofereix aquesta tècnica. A continuació, s'investiga la fabricació de multitud de xarxes difractives de proteïnes sobre discos TED, amb les quals s'ha demostrat la determinació sensible i sense marcatge d'anticossos, usant lectors adaptats com a escàners analítics.
