Coping with abortion: The effect of attributions, perceived avoidability, and acceptability

Thomas-Knowles, Carol Elaine 01 January 1992 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of attributions, perceived avoidability, and acceptability on long-term adjustment following abortion. From an initial group of 192 women undergoing first-trimester, elective abortion, we conducted analyses on a subgroup of 75 women who returned for a post-abortion follow-up visit. We were most interested in psychological factors present at the time of the abortion that could be used to predict adjustment at the follow-up visit six to eight weeks later. Measures assessing coping, self-esteem, and depression were used as indicators of adjustment. Over time, we found that adjustment following abortion tended to improve rather than decline; however, feelings of vulnerability also increased. In terms of attributions, only attributions to luck were directly related to adjustment. Women who blamed luck for their unwanted pregnancy coped worse relative to women who did not. Perceived avoidability was also directly related to coping; women who felt that they could have avoided the past unwanted pregnancy or could avoid one in the future experienced better adjustment. Attributions to the self and behavior, while not directly related to adjustment, were associated by virtue of their relationship to perceived avoidability; that is, the attribution-adjustment relationship was mediated by perceived avoidability. Acceptability of abortion was associated with coping. Women who were least accepting of abortion reported having the most difficult time coping. Acceptability of abortion, future avoidability, and attributions to luck were found to be the best predictors of adjustment. Finally, we examined women in terms of whether or not they used contraception at conception and found no differences in adjustment.

Dimensions of late adolescent popularity in two cultures: Taiwan and the United States

Chen, Feching 01 January 1992 (has links)
This study is concerned with a cross-cultural investigation of adolescent perceptions of popularity. In contrast to previous approaches, this study was designed to uncover factors determined by adolescents themselves. Using unconstrained methods of analyzing and interpreting data, we are allowed to increase the possibility of new findings. The purpose of this study was to identify naturally emerging categories used by adolescents in describing popular peers and to explore for possible dimensions that underlie the categories. Nineteen categories were identified. Some of these were similar to categories surfaced by previous research; others, like group-benefitted attributes, and qualities of social interaction, were previously unknown. The dimensions of adolescent popularity were suggested as Relational Orientation versus Appearance and Status and Ascribed versus Achieved. Cross-cultural comparisons were made through the use of sorting procedures, chi-square analysis, cluster analysis, and multidimensional scaling (ALSCAL & INDSCAL). By conceptualizing culture itself as a theoretical variable, interpretations were based on two lines: cultural-developmental tasks and the cultural dimension of collectivism versus individualism.

Götborg, Mathilda January 2023 (has links)

Depression levels in LGBTQ+ identifying Asian Americans and its correlation with assimilation and acculturation

Esquivel, Ronell Joman Flood 22 February 2024 (has links)
The specific aim of this research is to discuss ways that LGBTQ+ Asian Americans’ depression is measured and if there is a correlation into assimilating with U.S. Culture. Additionally, a review the current literature will be conducted on factors that contribute to identifying characteristics that are tied to adolescent depression and determine if increased levels of depression are found in Asian American immigrants and their families. This research will delve into the reasons why Asian-Americans who identify as LGBTQ+ have increased depression levels and what factors contribute to an elevated level of depression. Furthermore, we discover what further actions in research can be implemented to guide research in depression intervention specifically in LGBTQ+ youth in America.
