Nutritional and Microstructural Responses in Cereal Grains to Heat-Related Processing Methods

2015 October 1900 (has links)
Cereal grains share many common traits, but they also have different internal structures, nutrient values, degradation kinetics and digestion features. Heat treatments are commonly used in the feed industry. It is known that heat is able to change the nutrient values of the feed but the effect could be equivocal. In order to understand the effects of heat processing on internal structure and nutrient availability of cereal grains, two batches of wheat, triticale and corn were divided into three groups (control/raw (unheated), dry heating and moist heating) and processed at 121 °C for 80 min. Basic chemical analysis and in situ, in vitro assays were conducted and CNCPS, DVE/OEB and NRC-2001 models were used to determine the nutrient availability of the grains. In addition, two mid-IR molecular spectroscopy techniques (Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Synchrotron Radiation Infrared Microspectroscopy (SR-IMS)) were used to gain an insight into the heat-induced changes in the functional groups. Significant (P<0.05) differences were found between the cereal grains in their nutritional availabilities, including their chemical characteristics, protein and carbohydrate fractions, energy values, the ruminal degradation kinetics, hourly effective rumen degradation ratios, potential N-to-energy synchronization, and intestinal digestion of cereal grains. Compared to dry heating, moist heating had more impact on altering the nutrient profiles and showed the potential to increase the nutrient availability of wheat and triticale for dairy cattle. Significant differences (P<0.01) were detected between different feeds and heat treatment groups by using the ATR-FTIR technique. Results were found in consistency with the conventional chemical and animal studies mentioned above despite when using the SR-IMS technique. Significant (P<0.05) correlations were detected between some structure spectral characteristics and nutrient digestion traits. In conclusion, the moist heating had more profound impact than the dry heating in increasing nutrient supplies to ruminants in wheat and triticale. The heat-induced effects found in corn were less positive. The ATR-FTIR technique could detect the internal structural changes in cereal grains, while the sensitivity and accuracy of the SR-IMS technique were not proved in this study.

An inductively powered multichannel wireless implantable neural recording system (WINeR)

Lee, Seung Bae 21 September 2015 (has links)
A multi-channel wireless implantable neural recording (WINeR) system for electrophysiology and behavioral neuroscience research applications was proposed. The system is composed of two units: a system-on-a-chip (SoC) transmitter (Tx) unit and a receiver (Rx) unit. In the Tx unit, the outputs are combined with marker signals and modulated into pulse widths after the neural signals are amplified and filtered by an array of low-noise amplifiers (LNA). The next step involves time-division multiplexing (TDM) of pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals. The TDM-PWM signal drives RF transmitter block and is transmitted by an antenna. To satisfy the needs of neuroscientists during animal experiments, the proposed WINeR system provides long-term recording with inductive powering and stimulus-artifact rejection for closed-loop operations, which requires simultaneous stimulation and recording. The Rx is another critical unit for wireless-link communication. To increase the area of wireless coverage, multiple antennas are used for the Rx. In addition, the automatic frequency-tracking method is used to track free-running Tx frequencies, and a smart time-to-digital conversion method is used to reduce noise and interference. A high-throughput computer interface and software are also developed to continuously receive and store neural data. The WINeR system is a potential tool for neuroscientists due to several advantages, such as a reliable wireless link with large coverage and no blind spots, low power consumption, an unlimited power source, and a stimulation function.

The efficacy of an audio-visual aid in teaching the neo-classical screenplay paradigm.

Uys, P. Gerhard January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (DTech. degree in Drama) -- Tshwane University of technology, 2011. / The central theoretical statement of this study is that if one wishes to teach dramatic narrative structure, then an instructivist instrument such as an AVA would be useful, while one takes care of teaching the application of such a structure in a constructivist fashion. The purpose of the study was to design an effective teaching and learning (T&L) instrument (DVD AVA), justify the design through a literature study, and test the efficacy of the AVA through approved quantitative research methods. The research results showed a significant increase (12.6%) in the students construction of knowledge and a more skillful application of screenplay structure when they were trained by way of the AVA intervention as opposed to the traditional method.
