Caring for foreign-born persons with psychosis and their families : Perceptions of psychosis careHultsjö, Sally January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to describe and analyse perceptions of psychosis care among those involved in care, foreign‐born persons with psychoses, their families and health care staff, and further to reach agreement about core components in psychosis care. This was in order to find out whether current psychosis care in Sweden is suitable for foreign‐born persons and theirfamilies. The study design was explorative and descriptive. Health care staff (n=35), persons with psychosis (n=22) and families (n=26) of persons with psychosis were chosen from different regions in Southern Sweden. To capture health care staff’s experiences and to explore whether specific needs occurred within psychiatric care, nine focus group interviews were held. The perspectives of psychosis care among persons with psychoses and their families were captured through individual interviews. Finally, a study was accomplished all over Sweden in which staff, foreign‐born persons with psychosis and foreign-born families of persons with psychoses answered a questionnaire to identifycore components in psychosis care of foreign‐born persons and their families. There was agreement that the core components in psychosis care concern general psychiatric caring, even though varying perceptions were identified. Asking about foreign‐born persons’ religious and ethnic background or having the possibility to decide whether care should be provided by male or female staff were agreed to be less important. No agreement could be reached concerning the importance of considering different perceptions of psychosis care, treatments and different ways of managing the psychosis. Nor could agreement be reached as to whether staff should have specific cultural knowledge and whether interpreters should be unknown to the family but speak the right dialect. Perceptions among staff in somatic and psychiatric care as well as perceptions among foreign‐and Swedish‐born persons with psychosis and their families were more similar than different. General psychiatric care is important for Swedish‐born as well as foreign‐born persons with psychosis and their families, indicating the importance of not letting culturally determined perceptions dictate the care and take away energy from health care staff and make them lose their focus on the basic elements in general psychiatric care. However, within the general care there were individual perceptions on whose importance those involved in care did not agree. Further development suggested is to illuminate the importance of identifying individual perceptions which may differ between different persons and could be related to cultural background. Staff need to acquire strategies so they can easily manage to encounter and offer general care to foreign‐born persons. Development must be achieved on both an organizational level and an individual level. / Disseration

Feature-based representation for assembly modellingWan Harun, Wan Abdul Rahman Jauhari Bin January 1996 (has links)
The need for a product model which can support the modelling requirements of a broad range of applications leads to the application of a feature-based model. An important requirement in feature-based design and manufacture is that a single feature representation should be capable of supporting a number of different applications. The capability of representing products composed of assemblies is seen to be necessary to serve the information needs of those applications. To achieve this aim it is an essential prerequisite to develop a formal structure for the representation of assembly information in a feature-based design system. This research addresses two basic questions related to the lack of a unified definition for features and the problem of representing assemblies in a feature-based representation. The intention is to extend the concept of designing with features by incorporating assembly information in addition to the geometrical and topological details of component parts. This allows models to be assembled using the assembly information within the feature definitions. Features in this research are defined as machined volumes which are represented in a hierarchical taxonomy. The taxonomy includes several types and profiles of features which cover a general range of machined parts. A hierarchical assembly structure is also defined in which features form basic entities in the assembly. Each feature includes information needed to establish assembly relationships among features in the form of mating relationships. An analysis of typical assemblies shows that assembly interfaces occur at the face level of the mating features and between features themselves. Three mating relationships between pairs of features have been defined (against, fits and align) and are represented in the form of expressions that can be used for evaluations. Various sub-types of these major mating relationships can be identified (e.g. tight fit, clearance fit, etc.) and represented through the use of qualifying attributes. Component Relation Graphs, Feature Relation Graphs and Face Mating Graphs have been developed to represent each level of interaction in an assembly, and assembly relationships are combined with knowledge on process planning into a Component Connectivity Graph. These graphs are used as the basis for deriving an integrated data structure which is used for defining classes for each level in the assembly hierarchy. The implementation of a prototype system has been facilitated by use of an object-oriented programming technique which provides a natural method of adding functionality to the geometric reasoning process of features and the complex relationships between the parts that make up the assembly. The feature-based model is embedded in an object-oriented solid modeller kernel, ACIS®. The research demonstrates the possibilities for a single feature representation to support multiple activities within a computer integrated manufacturing environment. Such a representation can form the basis of design improvement techniques and manufacturing planning as well as be a model to support the life cycle of the product.

The dramaturgy of John Arden : dialectical vision and popular tradition : a doctoral dissertationMalick, Shah Jaweedul. January 1985 (has links)
The subject of this dissertation is John Arden's dramaturgy. It covers the stage plays written by Arden (alone or with Margaretta D'Arcy) during their career in the "professional" theatre--that is, from The Waters of Babylon to and including The Island of the Mighty. It approaches them as one dramaturgically coherent opus and identifies and examines the basic artistic and cognitive emphases immanent to it. / The study explores two fundamental and related constitutive features of Arden's dramaturgy: diachronically, its adherence to the forms, conventions, and techniques of popular or traditional theatres, and synchronically, its radical political emphasis as expressed in a categorically plebeian and collectivistic bias. It begins by situating Arden in his time and his tradition, and then discusses how other significant choices of his--the emphasis on story-telling (Part 2), the supra-individual approach to dramaturgic agents (Part 3), and his ludic theatricality (Part 4)--flow out of and contribute to the consistency of his dramaturgy. Part 5 focuses on a detailed analysis of The Island of the Mighty. / Arden's rejection of the established bourgeois theatre with its illusionist character and individualist ideology and his orientation towards a dialectical show distinguishes his work from that of his English contemporaries. It can be linked to that radical alternative tradition in modern dramaturgy which culminates in Bertolt Brecht.

Les Cenci d'Antonin Artaud, un théậtre cruel? : suivi de Le Foyer - texte dramatique / FoyerDuval, Laurent January 2005 (has links)
The thesis is divided in two sections; the first section consists in a critical document while the second presents my own creative writing, a play intitled Le Foyer. My use of theatrical writing in Le Foyer sought to privilege certain litterary techniques and dramatic processes elaborated by Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) in his manifesto The Theatre and his Double (1938). The thesis' theoretical section explores various issues at stake in my creative writing exercise: the link between the play Les Cenci and Artaud's metaphysic is questionned. I aimed to demonstrate how Les Cenci is an improbable example of the concept of Theatre of Cruelty. I stressed the liberties the playwright has taken with his theory when putting it into practice in a first attempt to create total theatre.

Rolling element bearing fault diagnostics using the blind deconvolution techniqueKarimi, Mahdi January 2006 (has links)
Bearing failure is one of the foremost causes of breakdown in rotating machinery. Such failure can be catastrophic and can result in costly downtime. Bearing condition monitoring has thus played an important role in machine maintenance. In condition monitoring, the observed signal at a measurement point is often corrupted by extraneous noise during the transmission process. It is important to detect incipient faults in advance before catastrophic failure occurs. In condition monitoring, the early detection of incipient bearing signal is often made difficult due to its corruption by background vibration (noise). Numerous advanced signal processing techniques have been developed to detect defective bearing signals but with varying degree of success because they require a high Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), and the fault components need to be larger than the background noise. Vibration analyses in the time and frequency domains are commonly used to detect machinery failure, but these methods require a relatively high SNR. Hence, it is essential to minimize the noise component in the observed signal before post processing is conducted. In this research, detection of failure in rolling element bearing faults by vibration analysis is investigated. The expected time intervals between the impacts of faulty bearing components signals are analysed using the blind deconvolution technique as a feature extraction technique to recover the source signal. Blind deconvolution refers to the process of learning the inverse of an unknown channel and applying it to the observed signal to recover the source signal of a damaged bearing. The estimation time period between the impacts is improved by using the technique and consequently provides a better approach to identify a damaged bearing. The procedure to obtain the optimum inverse equalizer filter is addressed to provide the filter parameters for the blind deconvolution process. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm is assessed initially using different kinds of corrupting noises. The result show that the proposed algorithm works well with simulated corrupting periodic noises. This research also shows that blind deconvolution behaves as a notch filter to remove the noise components. This research involves the application of blind deconvolution technique with optimum equalizer design for improving the SNR for the detection of damaged rolling element bearings. The filter length of the blind equalizer needs to be adjusted continuously due to different operating conditions, size and structure of the machines. To determine the optimum filter length a simulation test was conducted with a pre-recorded bearing signal (source) and corrupted with varying magnitude noise. From the output, the modified Crest Factor (CF) and Arithmetic Mean (AM) of the recovered signal can be plotted versus the filter length. The optimum filter length can be selected by observation when the plot converges close to the pre-determined source feature value. The filter length is selected based on the CF and AM plots, and these values are stored in a data training set for optimum determination of filter length using neural network. A pre-trained neural network is designed to train the behaviour of the system to target the optimum filter length. The performance of the blind deconvolution technique was assessed based on kurtosis values. The capability of blind deconvolution with optimum filter length developed from the simulation studies was further applied in a life bearing test rig. In this research, life time testing is also conducted to gauge the performance of the blind deconvolution technique in detecting a growing potential failure of a new bearing which is eventually run to failure. Results from unseeded new bearing tests are different, because seeded defects have certain defect characteristic frequencies which can be used to track a specific damaged frequency component. In this test, the test bearing was set to operate continuously until failures occurred. The proposed technique was then applied to monitor the condition of the test bearing and a trend of the bearing life was established. The results revealed the superiority of the technique in identifying the periodic components of the bearing before final break-down of the test bearing. The results show that the proposed technique with optimum filter length does improve the SNR of the deconvolved signal and can be used for automatic feature extraction and fault classification. This technique has potential for use in machine diagnostics.

Jinx infinity and the conundrum of mythCameron, Donna Maree January 2007 (has links)
The myth, Echo and Narcissus, is retold in a modern context in my play Jinx Infinity. The accompanying exegesis examines the techniques I employed in writing this piece with reference also to two other plays I have written from myth. This exploration seeks to determine the fine balance between focusing or relying on the myth and the actuality of writing a dramatic text to be performed on stage by actors in front of a live audience. I was able to divide the results from the examination of my writing process into a ten-step guideline or template. The question of balance is addressed throughout the guidelines but becomes particularly vital in the final step, when the playwright is advised to forget the myth in order to ensure the established principles of playwriting are adhered to. If these principals are present and the essence of the ancient myth is inherent, then the final product should be a successful play containing a universal theme that will translate through the ages.

The supramolecular chemistry of cucurbituril moleculesLorenzo, Susan, Chemistry, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
The set of molecules cucurbit[n]uril (Qn) are macrocycles composed of n glycoluril monomers linked by methylene groups. These molecules have two oxygen-ringed portals of a diameter slightly smaller than their internal cavity diameter. This thesis describes syntheses, crystallisations, crystal structure determinations, crystal packing analyses and force field calculations exploring the supramolecular chemistry of Qn molecules and their derivatives. Qn acts as a host for guest molecules and at the outset of this project no metal containing molecule had been encapsulated in a Qn molecule. One aim of this project was to prepare such complexes. This was achieved with the synthesis and characterisation of crystalline {[cis-SnCl4(H2O)2]@Q7}2(SnCl6)3(H3O)6(H2O)23. Other compounds prepared and characterised crystallographically in the course of this project are: [(Q6)(Na3(H2O)8)]2[CoCl4]4[Co(H2O)6]2[CoCl(H2O)5]2(Cl)4, (Q5@Q10)(CH3COOH)(Cl)2(H3O)2(H2O)26, (Cl@Q5)4Q6(SnCl6)8(H3O)20(H2O)24, (Q8)3(PtCl6)4(H3O)8(H2O)x, (Q8)2(PtCl6)3(H3O)6(H2O)18, (Q7)(Cr3O10)(H3O)2(H2O)x and (Q6)(SnCl6)(H3O)2(H2O)x. While the smaller Qn (n = 5?) retain their circular forms, the larger Qn (n > 8) are less rigid and distort to accommodate larger guests. After analysis of the crystal structures of these Qn compounds and those listed in the Cambridge Structural Database, the principal packing motifs of the Qn molecules were elucidated. The most common is the portal-to-side interaction in which the portal oxygen atoms of one Qn approach the hydrogen atoms around the equator of another Qn. Force-field calculations on guest@Qn complexes were conducted to determine the mechanism for the formation of these complexes. A comparison of the intermolecular interactions of phenylated systems and comparable fluorinated phenyl systems was made using both crystal packing analyses and forcefield energy calculations. Intermolecular energy parameters for these calculations were derived and validated in this work. The principal fluorinated species studied was the [B(C6F5)4]?anion. Examination of its crystal structures found that the substitution of the hydrogen atoms by fluorine atoms is influential enough to alter the predominant intramolecular conformation. It is the ???flipper?conformer, between pairs of perfluorophenyl groups, that is overwhelmingly the favoured conformation and this has a strong effect on the types of phenyl embraces that a [B(C6F5)4]?anion will form. While the parallel 4PFE, the offset parallel 4PFE and the orthogonal 4PFE are all observed the 6PFE is not.

Southern quest: a play and said and done: verbal and non-verbal information in contemporary theatrical writing.Lozano, Carlos Enrique, School of English, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
My critical essay maps out the relationship between verbal and non-verbal information in contemporary theatrical writing. It uses Lehmann's theory of a post-dramatic theatre and Pfister's analytical input to investigate different configurations of the information given by the characters' speech and the information given by their physical actions. The ways in which these variables interrelate define the type of affiliation between theatre and drama in any given text. My essay contends that the verbal and the non-verbal represent the two ends of the spectrum of possibilities of any written theatre text. The predominance of one over the other will determine the extent to which the 'presence' of the dramatist intervenes in the staging of the work. Using Old Times as a case study, I examine the way in which Pinter stretches the gap between the verbal and the non-verbal; by using his knowledge of the stage, he confronts the remoteness of the literary in theatrical writing. My play Southern Quest recognizes the minds of the readers and of the spectators as the place where the closure of the gap occurs. Its stage directions make of the stage, the properties and actions a creation that is parallel to the fictional one (only present in the dialogue of the characters). There is a permanent discrepancy, not a contradiction, between what is said and what and where it is done that demands that the actual assembly of the possible fiction takes place in the receiver's mind. The creative component draws on numerous elements analysed in the critical work, such as the discordance between the verbal and the non-verbal and the use of narrative monologues in theatrical writing. The lack of agreement between the verbal and the non-verbal-a heightened discordance at the beginning and the end of the play, with a minimal discrepancy towards the centre-mirrors the characters' journey throughout the play: from existential doubt to physical agony and back. The theoretical concerns addressed in the essay are explored in the writing of the play and my main formal drive in the creative piece is to explore the division between theatre and drama from within the text.
