Colour and sculpture : an investigation into the use of two dimensional media in sculpture

Wright, Jeanne January 1988 (has links)
From Introduction: Creative images which are normally called 'art' can be distinguished as either 'plastic' or visual. Both these forms throughout the history of art have relied to a greater or lesser degree on the use of colour. It is my intention to investigate specifically the changing role which colour has played in sculpture - the 'plastic' media of the visual arts and to chart the technical and aesthetic reasons for the use of colour. This investigation will encompass the historical perspective, the material qualities, aesthetic considerations, transitional codes and methods of approach in sociological frameworks and the examination of colour as a metaphysical element in the presentation of three dimensional media.

Creative maps for training systemic psychotherapists

Nel, Pieter Willem 08 1900 (has links)
In this study psychotherapy training is described from a new epistemological perspective. This perspective, based upon new science and physics and Batesonian evolution, embodies elements of holism, reciprocity, circularity and a both/and view of the universe. From a new epistemological perspective understandings of psychotherapy training are constructed, not discovered. By precluding the notion of absolute truth, an infinite variety of alternative constructions of training becomes possible. The conceptual map constructed in this study incorporates a process model for the training of systemic psychotherapists. In terms of this model, training should be a context where various orders of learning are encountered by student and trainer. In particular, the trainees must learn how to differentiate from each other and how to separate from the trainer. Three evolutionary stages of training are identified to describe how an emancipatory learning context may be created. It is suggested that training may never be concluded. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Centralidade da Avenida Assis Brasil: um estudo sobre a espacialização técnica ao longo do tempo na construção do espaço urbano

Teixeira, Thomás Nery da Silva January 2017 (has links)
Assis Brasil Avenue, in the north of Porto Alegre, is an important center for the metropolis and its region of influence. In this avenue converges large population contingents daily, these displacements are given by the concentration of big shopping centers, hospital, shopping malls, supermarkets, in addition to many other services, all linked by more than one hundred bus lines that circulate along the avenue. This centrality is part of the history of Porto Alegre, it began to be formed in the 1930s with the first urbanization movements through subdivisions made in this area, moreover, after the 1940s countless industries were located near the avenue for locational advantages. The urban space of this area gained importance through the development of local commerce, which rivals the center of the metropolis. Current trends in metropolization make this process more complex. Nowadays the financialization of space has led to the production of numerous buildings and has been the motor of urbanization in this centrality. This work proposes to be a study of the influence of different historical times in the constitution of the centrality of Avenida Assis Brasil, using Lefebvre's regressive-progressive method, we will try to understand the moments of perceived, conceived and lived in the centrality of the north port zone from its constitution to the present stage of metropolization. As a result, we have been able to establish relationships between the type of occupation of the buildings with their estimated time of construction. In addition, the methodology has given us to see new trends of urbanization in part of the Avenue.

Phenomena affecting ink transfer in offset lithographic printing

Vlachopoulos, Georgios January 2010 (has links)
The ink transfer mechanisms in the offset lithographic printing process is consisted by a complex inking roller train which a series of alternately rigid and deformable rollers, are used to precondition and deliver the printing fluid from the ink and fount reservoirs to the image carrier. The lithographic printing inks are complex formulated non-Newtonian fluids with high viscoelastic rheological profile and thixotropic behaviour. A set of ink dilutions was produced based on coldset lithographic printing ink diluted in concentration with Butyl-Diglycol. The rheological profile of the produced inks was examined by detailed rheological characterisation with particular interest on viscosity on tack, thixotropy, viscoelasticity, surface tension, extension and shear viscosity. Further examination established the relationships between shear viscosity and tack focusing on a printing nip between a rigid and elastic roller. A decrease in tack was found to be associated with a decrease in shear and the apparent extension viscosity. Developed imprinting and photographic techniques used to capture and characterise the fundamental phenomena of ribbing and misting associated with ink film splitting at the rollers nip in offset printing. Such techniques used to capture the dynamic profile of those mechanisms on a closed loop distribution system by using a tack meter. The detailed profile of those phenomena was characterised with particular interest on the relationship with the fluids rheological profile and the Capillary number. Extension rheometer was also used to analyse the mechanisms of ribbing and misting phenomena by experimental simulation of a printing nip. A factorial experiment was undertaken based on LI8 Orthogonal Array techniques. The parameters of rollers ratio, ink film thickness, temperature, distribution speed, distribution time and inks viscosity were found to have an influence on misting and ribbing phenomena. Results and analysis established responses and interactions between the process parameters but also between ribbing and misting as essential phenomena with the ink transfer mechanisms in lithographic printing process.

Composing for Marimba: Tools and Techniques for Composers

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This document offers composers a contextual reference and pragmatic overview of the modern marimba. This guide is not designed as an orchestration text, suggesting ways to write for the instrument, rather, it illustrates through examination of well-known solo and chamber works how selected composers have effectively written for the instrument. A guide for basic notation and examples of successful notation are included, as well as the basics of performer techniques. Samples of problematic, sometimes impossible passages are included to show the instruments and its performers' current limitations. The construction of the marimba and how it is tuned, a guide to mallets, and all of the current established extended techniques is also included. The majority of the information comes from the citation of established research on the marimba, composers and performers, and the author’s own experiences. The intention of this document is two fold: to give composers who are unfamiliar with marimba a resource to begin composing for the instrument effectively, and for those composers who are familiar with the marimba it is designed to spark their creativity in an efficient and effective manner. The ultimate goal of this document is to create compositional momentum for marimba solo and chamber works and grow the repertoire, which is still in its infancy. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2015

Ensemble(s) pour affronter le risque pyrotechnique : étude sociologique de l’application des dispositifs de prévention des risques des établissements DGA en France / Ensemble(s) to face pyrotechnic risk : a sociological study of implementation of risk management devices in French military armament testing centers

Rossignol, Karen 21 September 2009 (has links)
This research is based on the general hypothesis that the concept of risk is very useful for analyzing and understanding behavior and discourses in modern societies. It draws on a work that characterizes the institutional contexts where risk appears, the term institution meaning a stabilized structure of beliefs, representations and behavior juridically or culturally constituted and established by the community. This work made it possible to propose two operational hypotheses: - Risk is both real and socially constructed : we must take into account the fear of risk and the reality of danger; - Risk is revealing of modern visions of the world in action: the significance of risk is not only indigenous to a social group but also part of a social context that makes risk a general sociological issue. The confrontation of these hypotheses with field experiences relies on a study of the implementation of risk management devices in the Etablissement Technique de Bourges (ETBS), a French military armament testing center. The analysis of empirical materials (field observations, interviews, and documents) combines the study of formal aspects of institutions and the study of the actors' point of view and exposes the relationship between objective and subjective aspects of risk. It shows that the staff involved in pyrotechnic tests at ETBS assume a collective and individual responsibility in the management of risk where each of the staff members is aware of his responsibilities to the others that contribute to produce and reproduce a "chain of responsibility in the pyrotechnic tests".

Student satisfaction and dissatisfaction : a study in the higher education context

Douglas, Jacqueline January 2015 (has links)
This application for PhD by publication is the culmination of a series of investigations concerning the development of a conceptual model of student satisfaction with their higher education (HE) experience. The five core papers that sequentially contributed to knowledge are presented within this application, together with their supporting papers. In particular, the investigations focussed on what were the main determinants of student satisfaction utilising critical incident technique (CIT). New determinants of quality within higher education were identified as a result, namely motivation, praise/reward, social inclusion, usefulness, value for money and fellow student behaviour. The resultant research papers have made an original contribution to knowledge in the area of quality in HE. The rationale for using CIT to gather and analyse data was to investigate its effectiveness in triangulating with existing methods used in HE to measure student satisfaction. The CIT research was triggered by previous research that had developed and tested a student satisfaction questionnaire. CIT is used to gather data that is defined as ‘rich’. It is ideal when researching new areas. The questionnaire was based on the work of Sasser et al (1978) who proposed that service delivery consisted of a ‘bundle’ of goods and services, which incorporated distinct elements (the facilitating goods, the sensual service and the psychological service). The CIT survey instrument subsequently adopted, built upon the seminal work by Flanagan (1954) who developed it to assess the psychological impact (on pilots) when learning to fly. Both survey instruments were used to identify the determinants of quality in higher education from a student’s point of view and ultimately what was considered “critically critical” (Edvardsson & Nilsson-Wittel, 2004). An evaluation of teaching quality was carried out as part of this series during the mid-2000 era, and a comparison made of some of the existing measurement methods used at the time, such as student feedback questionnaires and peer review practices. A review of the potential use of mystery students in higher education was also carried out. This particular study highlighted the lack of confidence (by teaching personnel) in the existing methods for evaluating teaching quality as well as some mistrust of the concept of using mystery students in a classroom setting. A multi-method approach was chosen for this series of studies, because of the merits in using both quantitative and qualitative studies to generate data. Using such an approach provided a sequential method of analysing and presenting the data for this cross-sectional study. The initial student satisfaction questionnaire was a quantitative instrument and gathered data on importance and satisfaction ratings (using a five-point Likert scale) which were further analysed used quadrant analysis. The CIT survey was largely qualitative in nature and gathered written narratives from students about their positive and negative experiences; the resulting data used interpretive thematic analysis to identify key themes and any resulting patterns that could be coded quantitatively for input into the statistical software package SPSS. Each piece of research was underpinned by the existing literature at the time; this has inevitably progressed since then. CIT has been widely used in the service sector and additional determinants of quality within higher education have been identified within the current literature. A number of papers presented with this application have generated academic discussion in the field and these are evidenced by the number of citations for the applicant’s work. Moreover, the applicant’s additional supplementary papers also appended for background information have also been cited within the academic literature. The findings can be applied to teaching practice and within policy documents that support front-line teaching (and other) personnel in higher education.
