A Comparative Evaluation of an Educational Program Designed to Enable Mechanical Engineering Students to Develop Global Competence

The 'flattening of the world', using Thomas Friedman's phraseology, is driving corporations to increasingly use collaborative engineering processes and global teams to operate on a global scale. Globalization of the traditional university engineering curriculum is necessary to help students prepare to work in a global environment. More scalable and economically sustainable program types are needed to enable the majority of students to obtain a globalized education. The purpose of this research was to determine how effectively a global team- and project-based computer aided engineering course provided learning opportunities that enabled students to develop elements of global competence in comparison to existing engineering study abroad programs. To accomplish this, research was necessary to identify, aggregate, and validate a comprehensive set of global competencies for engineering students. From a review of the literature and subsequent analysis, a set of twenty-three global competencies with an associated conceptual model was developed to group the competencies by contextual topics. Two surveys were then developed and distributed separately to academic and industry professionals, each of which groups largely confirmed that it was important for engineering students to develop these global competencies. Next, the traditional ME 471 class was restructured into a Global ME 471 course. A pilot program was conducted from which lessons learned were incorporated into the global course. Selected global competencies were included as new learning outcomes. Course learning materials, labs, and lectures were also updated to reflect the new course emphasis. A survey was developed to be sent to BYU engineering study abroad students and the Global ME 471 course during 2010. A statistical analysis of responses was used to identify significant differences between the response groups. In addition to the global competencies which were identified and validated, global collaborative project-based courses such as Global ME 471 were shown to be effective in enabling students to learn and develop selected global competencies. Study abroad programs and the Global ME 471 course were seen both to be complementary in their emphasis and supportive of global engineering. In addition, global collaborative project-based courses were shown to play an important part of a globalized engineering curriculum.

Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Focusing for Integrated Optofluidic Detection Enhancement

The rise of superbugs, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and virus outbreaks, such as the recent coronavirus scare, illustrate the need for rapid detection of disease pathogens. Widespread availability of rapid disease identification would facilitate outbreak prevention and specific treatment. The ARROW biosensor microchip can directly detect single molecules through fluorescence-based optofluidic interrogation. The nature of the microfluidic channels found on optofluidic sensor platforms sets some of the ultimate sensitivity and accuracy limits and can result in false negative test results. Yet higher sensitivity and specificity is desired through hydrodynamic focusing. Novel 3D hydrodynamic focusing designs were developed and implemented on the ARROW platform, an optofluidic lab-on-a-chip single-molecule detector device. Microchannels with cross-section dimensions smaller than 10 μm were formed using sacrificial etching of photoresist layers covered with plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor-deposited silicon dioxide on a silicon wafer. Buffer fluid carried to the focusing junction enveloped an intersecting sample fluid, resulting in 3D focusing of the sample stream. The designs which operate across a wide range of fluid velocities through pressure-driven flow were integrated with optical waveguides in order to interrogate fluorescing particles and confirm 3D focusing, characterize diffusion, and quantify optofluidic detection enhancement of single viruses on chip.

Optofluidic Manipulation with Nanomembrane Platforms Used for Solid-State Nanopore Integration

Nanopore technology has introduced new techniques for single particle detection and analysis. A nanopore consists of a small opening in a membrane on the nanometer scale. Nanopores are found in nature and are utilized for transporting molecules through biological membranes. Researchers have been able to mimic naturally forming biological nanopores and utilize them for a variety of sensing applications. Nanopores, fabricated either organically or inorganically, can be used for detecting biomarkers such as proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolites that translocate the membrane by way of the nanopore. Constant ionic current flow is measured through the nanopore by way of a sensitive ammeter. In the presence of a biomarker, the ionic current flow will be impeded, causing the electrical signal to drop. This drop uniquely corresponds to the type of particle passing through the nanopore. In this work, the thin membrane on which the nanopore resides is created through a newly developed meniscus shaped sacrificial technique. The sacrificial polymer material starts as a liquid and is confined to the microfluidic channel through the capillary effect, giving it the meniscus profile. It is used as a structural support on which a thin silicon dioxide layer is grown. The layer of oxide takes on the same natural meniscus shape as the sacrificial material. The polymer is subsequently etched, resulting in a hollow core liquid channel with a suspended meniscus membrane. This process allows a thin membrane to be fabricated on top of a microfluidic channel that ranges from 50-200 nm in thickness. The meniscus membrane is crucial to the success of nanopore formation. The nanoscale membrane allows for smaller, more precise nanopores to be created. Reduced nanopore dimensions are advantageous for the detection of smaller biomarkers. The platform described in this dissertation integrates solid-state naturally forming meniscus membranes with solid-core and optofluidic waveguides for nanopore detection applications. The waveguides allow for a particle trap to be introduced to the system. The ability to trap particles directly under the nanopore is critical to the speed of which the nanopore can operate. This dissertation focuses on the fabrication, characterization, and testing of an optofluidic platform that features a nanopore for rapid single molecule detection and analysis.

Ce mémoire constitue la poursuite des travaux de validation de Vézina et Bourque de deux échelles d'auto-évaluation de la dépression, soient l'Inventaire de Dépression de Beck et l'Échelle de Dépression Gériatrique et ce, auprès de personnes âgées francophones. Trois volets d'analyse psychométrique ont composé ce projet de recherche dont l'objectif général était d'estimer les performances diagnostiques de ces deux échelles lorsque confrontées à un critère diagnostic de dépression majeure établi selon les critères du Diagnostic and Statistical Disorders(DSM-III-R). Le premier volet avait comme objectif principal de comparer et de déterminer lequel de ces deux instruments offrait la meilleure performance diagnostique auprès d'une population âgée francophone vivant à domicile. Il poursuivait comme autre objectif d'évaluer des indices de stabilité temporelle, de validité concomitante et discriminante ainsi que les taux de sensibilité et de spécificité pour l'ensemble des seuils d'utilisation. Le deuxième volet cherchait à mesurer lequel de ces deux instruments présentait la meilleure performance diagnostique mais cette fois-ci, auprès d'une population âgée francophone vivant en hébergement. Des taux de sensibilité et de spécificité pour tous les seuils d'utilisation, des indices de stabilité temporelle ainsi que de validité concomitante ont également été recueillis auprès de cette deuxième population. Le troisième volet adoptait une perspective d'étude différente en évaluant l'influence du milieu de vie d'hébergement et domiciliaire sur les performances diagnostiques respectives de ces deux échelles. Finalement, l'un des attraits majeur de ces analyses résidait dans l'apport novateur des courbes caractéristiques(Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) Curves) au domaine de la psychométrie.

In their shared goal of communicating left-wing principles to children through music, Marc Blitzstein's Worker's Kids of the World (1935), Aaron Copland's The Second Hurricane (1937), and Alex North's The Hither and Thither of Danny Dither (1941) exhibit a fundamental unity of purpose that binds them both to each other and to the extensive leftist pedagogical efforts of their time. By observing the parallel relationship among these three children's works and contemporary youth organizations, summer camps, and children's literature, their cultural objectives and stylistic idiosyncrasies emerge as expressions of a continuously evolving educational tradition. Whereas Worker's Kids comes out of the revolutionary Communist aesthetics of the Composers' Collective and the militant activism of The Young Pioneers, The Second Hurricane and Danny Dither reflect the increasingly accommodating educational efforts of the American Popular Front.

Beck mentions that depressive people are inclined to irrational beliefs, erroneous information-processing and dysfunctional automatic thoughts. To address this problem, six adolescents who experience subclinical depression, were subjected to Beck's cognitive therapy. The primary target of Beck's therapy is the correction of above mentioned dysfunctional cognitions. Bibliography: leaves 289-298 / Source-criticism of the Pentateuch suggests that the priests (Source P) alone authored the Holiness Code – the premise being that Source P forms one religious, literate and elite group of several. Through the endeavor to redefine Israelite identity during the Neo-Babylonian Empire of 626–539 BCE and the Achaemenid Persian Empire of 550–330 BCE, various ideologies of Israelite identity were produced by various religious, literate and elite groups. Possibly, the Holiness Code functions as the compromise reached between two such groups, these being: the Shaphanites, and the Zadokites. Moreover, the Holiness Code functions as the basis for the agreed identity of Israel as seen by the Shaphanites and the Zadokites. Specifically, in Leviticus 19:1-19a – as being the Levitical decalogue of the Holiness Code, and which forms the emphasis of this thesis – both Shaphanite and Zadokite ideologies are expressed therein. The Shaphanite ideology is expressed through the Mosaic tradition: i.e., through the Law; and the Zadokite ideology is expressed through the Aaronide tradition: i.e., through the Cult.
