Through Venezuela?s past experiences with foreign influences including its relationship with foreign oil companies and international organizations like the IMF, the current Venezuelan government has retaken control of national petroleum reserves. With the power acquired through the process of retaking control, the government has attempted to increase the incidence of regionalism and decrease the influence of the U.S. in three main ways: altering relationships with large South American powers, supporting leftwing governments in the region and establishing regional organizations and increased integration. However, the power acquired by the Venezuelan government and used to supplant its own influences for that of the U.S. comes from a contradictory relationship with the U.S. The contradictory nature of this relationship stems from the fact that while Venezuela supports the decline of U.S. influence and power in the region, Venezuelan power relies on access to U.S. markets to sell Venezuelan. Only through the stable sale of this petroleum does the Venezuelan government possess the capability of spreading its own influence through increasing regionalism and diminishing U.S. power.

The genus Lopidea Uhler is revised for America north of Mexico. The relationship of Lopidea to other orthotyline genera is discussed and it is proposed that the genus Ilnacora Reuter is the sister group of Lopidea. Forty-eight species of Lopidea are recognized in North America, one of which is described as new. My basic problem will be not to prove that Faulkner is, was, a sociologist or to suggest that his works be required reading in courses in sociological theory, but rather, to show in what sense and what areas his and the role of sociologist overlap. A. thorough reading of the major Faulkner novels, a sorting-out and. probing of his passages relevant to the field of sociology seems the most productive way to begin tackling the problem. First the effort will be made to grasp his ideas in context, then to extricate and analyze them out of context. The relationship of Faulkner to trends in contemporary sociology requires a treatment on many levels. We will first need to compare the artistic and sociological techniques. Then we shall want to look at Faulkner's work itself and to consider his use of the sociological perspective. Aspects in the writings of William Faulkner to be given special emphasis are culture and personality, the regionalism, social class and mobility, and occupational structure as reflected in his major literary themes, symbolic constructions and character developments

The present dissertation reconstructs the notion of legitimacy in Ecuador between 1996 and 2007 in order to re-think our measurements and understanding of Latin American democracies. Empirically, the analysis is centered on the country`s puzzling tendency to survive institutional volatility, bad economic performance and social unrest, while the theoretical section underlines the importance of the vertical and horizontal participatory components of legitimacy. After exploring different plausible explanations of Ecuador`s puzzling mixture of political turmoil and regime endurance, this dissertation concludes that legitimacy helped democracy to endure in Ecuador. The main conclusion is that the horizontal components of political participation and the enactment of democratic values by social movements as well as new political parties played a key role in the survival of democracy. The dissertation contributes to the democratization literature by encompassing the normative elements of democracy, while at the same time contributes to democratic theory by pushing further the boundaries of a notion and a case that requires further attention.
