Waging Care in Anishnabe Aki: The Algonquins of Barriere Lake and Sixties Scoop Diasporas Against Canada's Economy of Indigenous Child Removal

This dissertation proceeds from the Algonquins of Barriere Lake’s enactments of Indigenous law as a praxis of care against colonial systems that commoditize Anishnabe children and land. It emerges from a co-designed nation and community-specific ethnographic and archival study with the Algonquins of Barriere Lake to analyze the Youth Protection system, and a co-designed ethnographic and archival project with the Ottawa-based Sixties Scoop Network on healing, displacement, and reparations for the 60s Scoop. Through using the land, Barriere Lake maintain their sacred connections to animals, ancestors and water. This dissertation thinks care in three registers: as Anishnabe ‘physical, emotional and spiritual’ relations of care on land, as daily assertions of Indigenous legal praxis, and as critiques of settler political economy. In November 2015, members of the Algonquins of Barriere Lake rallied at the offices of the CISSSO, a Quebec Youth Protection agency in Maniwaki, Quebec that has placed 147 children from their 792-person First Nation into out of home care since 1990. Barriere Lake mothers held signs asserting “Our children are not commodities.” Throughout the fall of 2015, the community held a camp to protect their lands from exploratory drilling by the junior mining company Copper One; a sign declaring ‘This land is not for sale.’ As CISSSO (2019) secures nearly $2 million annually by taking Barriere Lake children from their kin settler industries extract over $100 million in resources from Barriere Lake’s territories. Canada’s genocidal church-run, state-mandated Residential Schools system was instituted as the nascent nation began to create its wealth and home from Native lands and resources. Between 1951-1991 (the Sixties Scoop), over 22 500 Indigenous children were removed from their kin into predominantly non-native homes (Brown v Canada 2017). In 2016, Canada’s national resources sector accounted for $216 billion; while in 2018 the child welfare system generated $2.5 billion and billions more in family stipends and allowances from a system in which over 52.5% of children are Indigenous (StatsCan 2016, 2018). The gendered fiscal and libidinal economies of Canadian colonialism incentivize the apprehension of Indigenous children and criminalize Indigenous caregivers, especially mothers (2016 CHRT 2). By examining how present systems reproduce the gendered violence of child-taking and abuse systematized in Residential Schools, this dissertation argues that Canada securitizes its economy of extraction from Indigenous lands through the mass abduction of Indigenous children into the child welfare system. Algonquin Anishnabeg jurisdiction is asserted as a praxis of care which, waged daily along with Sixties Scoop survivor struggles for justice, unwinds the fabric of a system of child-taking and land-theft.

Latin America is a region that has deep roots in Spanish colonialism. Since its independence, many countries in the region have heavily depended on agriculture exports to industrialized states to support their economies. This has led to political theorists to label Latin America as an area full of "periphery" countries that are exploited for resources by "core countries. Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua were not the exception. In recent years, however, a noticeable difference between the economies of the countries has helped Costa Rica and Panama become more successful than Nicaragua, on the basis of GDP, GNI, and other similar measures. This thesis attempts to explain this economic difference by analyzing what type of relationship the three countries have had with the United States (which has acted as a regional hegemon) and analyzing how each country has handled economic dependence on agriculture. Through this comparative case study, the thesis tries to add to development and dependency theory literature.

Clothing labels are considered to be a source of information to consumers in a developing (Potchefstroom, in the North West Province of South Africa) and a developed country (Fayetteville, Arkansas, in the United States of America) context, which serve to promote the standard of consumer decisions by providing information on the intrinsic and extrinsic product properties and care instructions. Once consumers in these two contexts come in contact with clothing labels, the sensory information is registered into buffers that are located in their sensory memory store and the relocation of (clothing label) information to their long-term memories (knowledge) depends on their level of attention and information rehearsal. Although a number of studies have been conducted on clothing labels and the construct of knowledge separately, few studies were found to focus on consumers’ knowledge of clothing labels while none have compared the knowledge of consumers from different settings. The aim of this study was to compare the subjective and objective knowledge of the information on clothing labels of consumers in a developing (Potchefstroom, SA) and a developed (Fayetteville, USA) country context in order to determine the differences between these consumers’ knowledge of clothing labels. Furthermore, the objectives of this study were to determine the demographic profiles of respondents in a developing and a developed country context; the differences in the subjective knowledge of respondents on clothing labels; the differences in the objective knowledge of respondents with regard to the written and pictorial information on clothing labels; the association between respondents’ subjective and objective knowledge of the information on clothing labels and the differences in the subjective and objective knowledge of respondents from different demographic subgroups. The aim and objectives of this study were reached by employing a quantitative, comparative, descriptive approach. Furthermore, purposive sampling was used to recruit respondents in Potchefstroom and Fayetteville who met specific inclusion criteria. Respondents in this study had to be between the ages of 18 and 70 years, participate in clothing shopping, be able to read clothing labels and respondents and their spouses should not have worked in a clothing-related sector. Potential respondents in both cities were approached at predetermined public and private areas, such as universities, municipal offices, retirement facilities, parking areas and shopping centres which existed within both cities at the time. Data were collected simultaneously in Potchefstroom (N=445) and Fayetteville (N=336) by employing an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Male and female respondents and the Black/African and White/Caucasian population group in Potchefstroom were well distributed; however, female respondents were more and the White/Caucasian population group was the largest in Fayetteville. Furthermore, respondents of the different age groups were well distributed in Potchefstroom while there were more respondents in Fayetteville who were between 18 to 24 years of age and less respondents who were 25 to 34 years of age. The largest percentage of respondents in Potchefstroom completed a secondary education while the largest percentage of respondents in Fayetteville completed a tertiary education. In addition, in both Potchefstroom and in Fayetteville, the largest number of respondents did not have any children under the age of 18 years residing with them. Some demographic subgroups of respondents in a developing country context indicated that they did not use clothing labels because it is confusing, difficult to locate information and too detailed. In contrast, some demographic subgroups of respondents in a developed country context experienced problems with the small size of the label content and the trustworthiness of clothing labels. The results indicated that objective knowledge regarding “symbols” of respondents from Potchefstroom and Fayetteville differed practically significantly while only a tendency was evident for the difference in their objective knowledge regarding the written information on clothing labels. No practically significant differences were found for their subjective knowledge and objective knowledge of “do not symbols”. Results further indicated a negative association between respondents’ subjective and objective knowledge of the written information on labels, implying that the higher respondents’ perceived knowledge, the lower their actual knowledge of the written information was. Subjective knowledge among respondents in these two cities and countries were found to differ regarding age and education, while objective knowledge of “symbols” and “do not symbols” were found to differ regarding age, education and amount of time spent shopping for clothing products. Some differences with regard to gender were also evident for “symbols”. The results of this study clearly indicated a lack of clothing label knowledge, predominantly among consumers in a developing country context with regard to “symbols” as well as a lack of objective knowledge concerning “do not symbols” among respondents in Potchefstroom and Fayetteville. It is therefore suggested that the results of this study should be used for the development of educational programmes and/or extension services in Potchefstroom. Such programmes and services should primarily be aimed to promote consumers’ knowledge of clothing labels, more predominantly within SA. Manufacturers, clothing retailers and marketers within both contexts can also contribute to improve the lack of objective knowledge regarding all the information on clothing labels among respondents in Potchefstroom as well as Fayetteville respondents’ knowledge of “do not symbols”. Destination USA : William Least Heat-Moon and American travel writing

Destination USA examines the works of the travel writer William Least Heat-Moon and his place ·in the tradition of American travel writing. The study begins with an overview of the current scholarship and trends within contemporary American travel writing and then moves on to limit and to define its scope. Next an outline and an in-depth explanation of the structure and thematics of such works is presented. Contemporary American travel writing has two dominant structures: the on-the~road motif and the intimate journey Of~ place. Woven into these two structures are three main themes common to both. The first theme focuses on the role of selfdiscovery in travel writing. The second theme highlights the role of travel writing in discovering hidden or marginalised American voices. The third theme centres around travel writing's use as a warning about or an assessment of the current American situation. Next a historical overview of the roots of American travel writing is undertaken which highlights the role it has played in the foundation of the country as well as providing the basis for those structures and themes outlined above. From there the dissertation moves onto an analysis of the works of William Least Heat-Moon: Blue Highways (1982), PrairyErth (1991) and River-Horse (1999). Heat-Moan's works provide an effective focal point for the understanding of contemporary American travel writing as a whole. They are forward looking and experimental while retaining a continuity with the tradition of American travel writing. An in-depth analysis of his trilogy on the American landscape is supported by previously unpublished interviews by the author. His works are then examined to uncover how they point to travel writing's elision with naturalist prose and work together to form a multifaceted vision of America. !
