This paper looks at the topic of immigration from a philosophical standpoint and concludes that an open border policy is morally obligatory. I first argue that immigration cannot act as a corrective to the problems of global poverty as many philosophers have suggested. I then look at two common defenses for restrictive borders, one resting on the cultural community and one on the political community, and conclude that these two defenses are inadequate. The fact that a restrictive policy is morally unjustifiable coupled with my argument that people ought to be able to enjoy a freedom of movement suggests that an open border policy is necessary.

In this thesis I point to the continued existence in the Scottish Borders of a small number of traditional, great landowning families who exert an enormous amount of power and influence at the level of everyday life. I attempt to show how the basis of this power has changed over time. What started out as essentially military power became, with the Agricultural Revolution, economic power. At the same time, an increasingly political basis to this power was being developed and this was sustained, more or less, until the reorganisation of Scottish local government in 1974. After reorganisation, politics as a channel of influence became blocked and for a while it seemed as if the days when the lairds ran rural society were over, ending not so much with a bang as with a whimper. In the Borders this was not the case, for many lairds had already been busy investigating new ways to make their presence felt. This was achieved by enterprising lairds like the Duke of Buccleuch and the Duke of Roxburghe being prepared to open their stately/ancestral homes to the public; laying the foundations for the birth of a Scottish 'heritage industry' as they did so. The basis of power was thus transferred from the level of politics to that of ideology and it is with this transformation that I am essentially concerned.

The current research reviews the topic of the potential future borders of the European Union in great details. It uses the combined methodological approach involving the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the economic, political, geographical, and civilization factors of the EU member countries and its potential members. The analysis particularly focuses on the following potential members: Georgia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkey, analyzing them based on the mentioned factors to identify the possibility of their accession in the future. The thorough historical background of the current research, as well as the fact that its theoretical foundation lies on the official governmental documents of the EU, its official statistics, and official reports, which express the opinions of the EU legislative bodies, contribute to the credibility and precision of the research, allowing it to reach its main aim: to identify the future potential borders and members of the European Union.

The boundaries of Texas were the cause of disputes between the French, the Spanish, Mexico, and later the United States of America. The intensity of these disputes threatened to disrupt the Union itself, and caused a war between the United States and Mexico.
