Design of cylindrical plastic pipe linings to resist buckling due to collapse pressures

Boot, John C. January 2005 (has links)
Flexible (non-bonded) polymeric sewer linings are used extensively to renovate both gravity and pressure pipes. Linings for both types of pipe are subject to collapse pressures, and in the case of gravity pipes this is the dominant source of loading; the efficient design of linings to sustain collapse pressures is therefore an important problem. In this paper, the buckling of an ideal thinwalled elastic lining in a rigid cylindrical cavity is first presented as a simple closed form solution, and The effect of a representative small imperfection shown to be significant. The different types of imperfection that can be encountered in practical lined pipe systems are identified, and the situations in which each can arise are discussed. A generalised procedure for obtaining the structural imperfections in, and hence buckling capacities of, practical systems is then presented and two example applications are used to illustrate its application in specific situations.

Resistance of Members to Flexural Buckling According to Eurocode 3 : - Focus on Imperfections

Hirani, Aliasgar, John, George, Mupeta, Henry January 2015 (has links)
This work focuses mainly on the resistance of members to flexural buckling according to Eurocode 3. The work provides the mathematical backgrounds to the equations and buckling curves presented in Eurocode 3. The work also, attempts to reveal how different imperfections influence the flexural buckling resistance which is demonstrated through Finite Element (FE) simulations. The work presents modeling and analysis on a steel column in ABAQUS 6.14. Linear and non-linear buckling analyses of the steel column, with the influence of imperfections, are implemented in this work. Specifically, the imperfections considered in this study are material plasticity, initial bow and residual stress. The influence of initial bow imperfection of 0.1% of the length of the column considering flexural buckling was found to be 45.28% of the Euler buckling load. The influence of residual stresses, with a magnitude of maximum about 13% in the flange and 35% in the web, of the yielding strength, on flexural buckling is about 31.9% of the design Euler buckling load. The combined effect of residual stress and initial bow imperfection on flexural buckling is about 45.34% of the design Euler buckling load.

Techniques of meso-scale measurement of fibre assemblies

Chilo, Marco January 2013 (has links)
The objective of this research project is to investigate novel concepts of determining fibre assembly mechanical properties at woven fabric at meso-scale, viz. yarns and unit-cell. In order to carry out this investigation three instruments were developed and these are presented in subsequent chapters of this thesis. Initially, an instrument was built in order to explore the buckling technique on yarns and fabrics. The data obtained was converted into pure bending output through a proposed non-linear planar elastica model. It was found that the data obtained were in agreement with data obtained from other measuring technique already available in the industry, viz. Pure Bending tester (KES FB2) from the Kawabata Evaluation System. This investigation also found that the buckling technique offers some advantages when compared with the bending tester. Furthermore, the yarn compression method was also explored. A Yarn Compression tester (YCT) was developed in order to carry out this study. This instrument induces transverse compression upon the yarn by means of a probe, which results in a compression versus thickness curve. An, additional feature was introduce on the YCT, such as the use of a digital camera that allows the yarn lateral spreading to be determined as the yarn is compressed. This feature may be used to calculate the Poisson’s ratio, which can be used as an input value for future compression models. Good agreement was found between the proposed yarn compression technique and data obtained from the Kawabata compression tester. Finally, yarn torsional technique was explored by means of developing a Yarn Torsion tester (YTT). It was found that data obtained for this instrumentation were in agreement with a linear model proposed by Postle et al. This investigation may allow future research to continue by means of proposing a torsion mathematical model.
