The Trinitarian Telos of the Summa theologiae: Thomas’s Application of the Aristotelian Ordo Disciplinae to Sacra Doctrina in light of his Augustinian Heritage

Sanders, Jennifer Marie January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Dominic Doyle / I argue for a performative reading of the Summa theologiae in relation to Thomas Aquinas’s coordination of the trinitarian processions with the trinitarian image and the process of teaching and learning. Specifically, I argue that the Summa is skillfully arranged in order to initiate the student into the graced process of conceiving words about the Triune God that burst forth into love—the very processions by which we are ad imaginem Dei and become more like God. Learning to speak truly and love rightly prepares students to preach about God within their culture, just as Thomas’s own efforts to preach the trinitarian mystery indicate. My argument takes into account Thomas’s life as a Dominican preacher and teacher in thirteenth-century Europe as well as his theology of the mixed life of contemplation and action. With respect to the latter, Thomas maintained that the Dominican must draw in contemplation what he will pour out later on in preaching (contemplata aliis tradere). Thomas wrote the Summa theologiae with this pastoral orientation in mind. In light of this historical context, I argue that the Summa is a performative text and transformative encounter with sacra doctrina written to prepare Dominican students to hand on the fruits of their contemplation. This interpretation of the Summa theologiae and Thomas’s trinitarian theology enriches standard contemporary interpretations of the psychological analogy. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College. An Architurecture of Absence, A study on silence in architecture

George, Robin 03 February 2015 (has links)
This thesis documents an inquiry into the architecture of contemplative spaces and the process and evolution of the design of such a place. Man has often sought a place of solitude, a shelter, where the diversities diminish and differences become insignificant. In the recent decades many non-denominational temples and chapels, such as the MIT peace chapel, were built around the world by seekers of unity in diversity. This study explores the design of such a place and inquires into how the subtle architectural aspects contribute to the quality of solitude and tranquility of that place. These aspects are further explored in the design of a rotunda which becomes the heart of the thesis. / Master of Architecture

How Architecture can influence private contemplation and public negotiation

Bello, Bradford August 18 April 2006 (has links)
No one needs to lose in order for someone else to win. The increasing number of mediation centers throughout the world shows the desire of conflicting parties to find some type of resolution where both may be satisfied. While most centers present the process and rules for mediation, few centers emphasize the environment in which the negotiation is conducted. Retrofitted office buildings, resorts, and agreed ‘neutral’ sites are common destinations to conduct mediation services. How can Architecture influence private contemplation and public negotiation? This thesis attempts to investigate the effect of our built environment on how individuals work together. To explore this question, a conflict resolution center becomes the vehicle to study the physical, social, and intellectual impact on thinking and decision-making. / Master of Architecture
